1978 – Let There Be Light!

Sydney got its first taste of nighttime Cricket when a crowd of 44,000+ attended the World Series Cricket game between the Australians and the West Indies in a day/night clash at the SCG.

The game was in such high-demand with the Sydney fans that long lines stretched out of the SCG as far as the eye could see resulting in World Series Cricket owner Kerry Packer demanding the gates be thrown open to allow everyone in.

Many regard this game as the making of World Series Cricket after the split between the Cricketing establishments.

For the record, the Australians won the match by five wickets, with Dennis Lillie taking 4/13 and being named man of the match.

Ian Davis scored the match high 48 not out for the Australians.

1956 –Second Aussie Gold at the Friendly Games

Shirley Strickland took out two gold medals at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic games on this day in 1956.

Here’s how The Age newspaper saw it at the time…
