2021 Tattersall’s Members Cup Day Preview

Black type racing returns to the Sunshine Coast this weekend as a quality field of gallopers step out over the mile in the Listed Tattersall’s Members’ Cup.

Three Prelude races will also be run and won leading into next month’s $500,000 Jewel race on March 13.

Our best bets for the entire nine-race program can be found below.

Race 1 - 12:23pm AEDT

Tattersall’s Arcahde Class 3 Plate (1600m)

A wide-open race to start the program and it doesn’t get any easier from here.

Bonaparte is a dual acceptor but does look tough to beat here dropping back in grade following a cruisy four-length win over shorter in Benchmark 75 company a fortnight ago.

The son of Pierro settled up front just off the speed before unleashing over the final 100m to win comfortably. There’s no question he’ll see out the mile now, and if he does line up in this, he’ll take a power of beating.

Word For Word is a tough one to trust on recent form, but she does look the logical danger making the trip up from Sydney after racing in tougher company.

She’s placed in six of her seven starts over this trip previously and will only improve with rain about.

Wolf Moon won well second-up at Doomben two weeks ago and must be included in your numbers, while another win looks right around the corner for Smart Meteor based on recent efforts.

Race 2 - 12:58pm AEDT

Legacy Benchmark 75 Handicap (1800m)

Miss Penfold bolted in to beat home Meteor Light two weeks ago at Doomben over further and looks well-suited getting back to the 1800m now.

The Pierro mare was the clear winner over this trip at Eagle Farm three runs back and has drawn to get a nice run in transit off the speed.

Steinbrenner has been the early market mover getting in nice and light at the weights.

Mark Currie’s five-year-old has won two of his last three starts, which includes a comfortable win over the mile at this venue three runs back.

Scratches gets to the right race now and is worth entertaining with two wins on the board over the 1800m.

The Street Cry mare showed improvement last start hitting the line well for third over the mile. She’s drawn to get the gun run in transit again from the inside barrier.

Race 3 - 1:37pm AEDT

Tattserall’s Wedings Jewel Prelude 2YO Fillies Plate (1000m)

The first Jewel Prelude of the day is between the fillies, and it looks to be a good one with Sweet Dolly and Glorious Ruby both lining up.

The former is unbeaten in two runs so far, both over the same trip at Townsville and Eagle Farm. She resumes on Saturday with the winkers on for the first time and is more than capable of leading them all the way.

Glorious Ruby’s resume reads just as well with two wins from three starts.

The daughter of Your Song lead all the way to win the Listed Sedan Classic over the 1200m two runs back and was equally as impressive dropping back to the 1050m at the Gold Coast last start.

She comes in with plenty of fitness on her side and should be doing her best work late.

2 Units Glorious Ruby

Race 4 - 2:17pm AEDT

Tattersall’s Events Jewel Prelude 2YO C&G Plate (1000m)

Another fascinating Prelude race, this time between the boys.

Cochrane has raced well without winning so far and looks the horse to beat.

The Spirit Of Boom gelding was unlucky not to score on debut when a narrow runner-up to Alpine Edge over the same trip in Listed company at Eagle Farm before running last at Randwick in the wet on Boxing Day.

Whether he handles another wet track remains to be seen, but his recent trial at Doomben was full of merit and the inside draw only strengthens his chances.

Hamlet Von Snitzel comes out of the same race behind Glorious Ruby two weeks ago at Doomben. He looked the winner up until the final 100m where he just weakened out of it for fourth.

Gemelon Bolt was good on debut for second at Doomben and will likely make his own luck again on speed.

2 Units Cochrane

Race 5 - 2:57pm AEDT

Travis Schultz & Partners Jewel Prelude 3YO Handicap (1000m)

The boys take on the girls in the 3YO Prelude with plenty of speed on offer.

Kisukano was exceptional during the Spring winning three of her five starts across the Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm and it’s no surprise to find her on top.

She failed to return a similar effort first-up in the Listed Magic Millions Nudgee Stakes in Brisbane last month but is worth forgiving with the track more to her liking and dropping back in class.

Mass Destruction flies fresh and was another top performer during the Spring.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding won three of his four starts and looked in exceptional order in his trial win at Doomben two weeks ago.

Simply Fly scored his hat-trick last month with a win over this same track and trip by a nose to Little River.

He’s gone to another level under Stephanie Thornton and will no doubt be doing his best work late.

2 Units Mass Destruction

Race 6 - 3:37pm AEDT

Winning Edge Benchmark 80 Handicap (1000m)

Chivargo is the rightful favourite in this wide-open race after beating home the highly regarded Ingear by over a length three weeks ago at Eagle Farm.

The Deep Field mare is a perfect three-from-three at this course, and although this is her toughest assignment to date, there’s no question she’s capable of handling it with next to no weight on her back.

Howwonderfullifeis did just enough to fight back and win at Doomben second-up. She rarely runs a bad race over this trip and should get the gun run on the inside under Ryan Maloney.

Katy’s Daughter has been the model of consistency winning two of her last three starts in easier company. She comes into this fresh and is worth a thought in exotics.

2 Units Chivargo

Race 7 - 4:13pm AEDT

Marketing Solutions Open Handicap (1200m)

Gem Of Scotland flies first-up as she returns to the races for the first time in close to a year.

The mare by Rothesay is three-from-four when resuming and showed plenty of toe to finish a narrow second in her trial at Toowoomba earlier this month.

Run For Glory tends to go well fresh and his recent form makes for easy reading.

The Tony Gollan gelding won five of his six starts last time in work and is also a perfect two-from-two at the Sunshine Coast. The wide draw makes things difficult, but he should be finishing off strongly if Jim Byrne can take him back early.

Doctor Zous is ready to peak after finding the money in his last two starts. He loves racing over this trip, and providing the track isn’t too wet, looks a major player from the soft draw.

Race 8 - 4:50pm AEDT

Listed Tattersall’s Members’ Cup (1600m)

Ligulate is airborne right now and it would not be surprising to watch him storm home over the top of most of these in the late stages.

The five-year-old rattled off an impressive win two runs back over the mile at Doomben before going one better out further at Eagle Farm three weeks ago.

He’s come from well back in the field in each of those starts, and with even luck, he’ll take a power of beating again.

Matowi continues to flirt with another win after winning four runs back over the 1600m at Kembla Grange. The son of Ocean Park has work to do from out wide, but he loves it wet and now drops 2.5kg in the saddle.

Star Of Michelin is a proven miler with three wins on the board. This is tougher company, but if he settles on speed like he did last start to win over the track and trip, he’s right in this.

Sofie’s Gold Class has a win to her name on both the soft and the heavy and looks next best.

2 Units Ligulate

Race 9 - 5:28pm AEDT

Garth Hughes Memorial Benchmark 75 Handicap (1400m)

Rough way to end the day with a case to be made for almost three-quarters of the field.

Scottish Mist has hardly put a foot wrong as she continues her rise through the grades.

The Rothesay mare stuck on well to win narrowly at Doomben last start over 50m shorter and gets in with a kg off her back.

She’s four-from-five over this trip and should be doing her best work late from the soft draw.

Bering Sea has drawn wide, but he does enjoy racing with some sting out of the track.

The son of Pierro has placed twice over this trip previously and is another one that should be pouncing in the dying stages.

Barney’s Law comes out of the same race for second and is capable of going one better with 1.5kg off his back. The four-year-old by Zoustar was a back-to-back winner earlier in his prep and should go well stepping out over further.
