2021 Tancred Stakes Preview

The Tancred Stakes (2400m) is one of two Group 1’s on the card at Rosehill on Saturday as a field of 14 line up with $1.5 million on the line.

After finding some form last week in the Ranvet, defending Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet has been installed as the co-favourite alongside Melody Belle, who is shooting for her 15th Group 1 win under back-to-back Tancred winner James McDonald.

The Sky High Stakes quinella of Toffee Tongue and Spirit Ridge make up the second line of betting, while there’s also been some interest for Peter Moody’s Irish raider Nickajack Cave ahead of his Australian debut.

In what is arguably the toughest race on the program, you can find our thoughts on each runner in our 2021 Tancred Stakes Preview!

Sir Dragonet

Sir Dragonet returns on the quick backup on Saturday after showing some real improvement for fourth last week in the Ranvet Stakes.

Despite racing a little wide at the turn, the son of Camelot finished strong through the line behind Verry Elleegant and Addeybb – a performance that has left the Maher and Eustace team targeting the Tancred ahead of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in two weeks.

The son of Camelot has won over similar distances in the past and should appreciate the extra 400m at this stage of his prep.

He’s rock-hard fit, and with the track likely playing a little more to his liking, he’s one of the major players.

Mirage Dancer

Mirage Dancer took out the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick back in the spring in what was his fourth carer win over 2400m.

The son of Frankel over-raced in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes first-up, but did show improvement finishing a length third to Toffee Tongue last time out in the Sky High Stakes.

His win in The Metropolitan came third-up from a spell, and it appears the Busuttin and Young team are banking on a repeat of that performance.

The seven-year-old isn’t the most impressive stayer going around, but he should get his chance in a race that is lacking its usual quality.

The Chosen One

The Chosen One is having his second run back in Australia after making up decent ground in the late stages for sixth in the Sky High Stakes.

Before that, the son of Savabeel finished runner-up to Royal Performer in the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) in New Zealand in his first run back from a spell.

The Forsman-trained gelding was unlucky not to claim a black-type win during the spring where he finished third to Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup, followed by a very brave performance for fourth in the Melbourne Cup.

With eyes towards the Sydney Cup, the mile and a half looks ideal for him at this stage of his prep, and the wide gate should offer Hugh Bowman an opportunity to get back and run on.

Southern France

Southern France won the Group 2 Sandown Classic over this trip two years ago during the spring, but he’s struggled to find that same form against much tougher company since resuming from a lengthy spell.

The Maher and Eustace-trained six-year-old has finished no better than seventh in three starts at Group 1 level, but he did finish strongly through the line last time out behind two talented horses in Verry Elleegant and Colette in the Chipping Norton.

While his recent form makes for tough reading, Ciaron Maher seems to think he’s a horse of ability with plenty left to come.

Two wins over the 2400m makes him worth a shout each way.

Sound

Sound returns to Australia on Saturday after finding the money in the Group 1 Auckland Cup two weeks ago.

Like Southern France, the old boy took out the Sandown Classic over this trip back in November before heading back to New Zealand.

He hasn’t contested an Australian Group 1 since he ran 12th in the 2019 Melbourne Cup, but his recent form suggests he could run a cheeky race at odds.

Spirit Ridge

Spirit Ridge had his chance at a hat-trick denied by Toffee Tongue first-up in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes where he was run down close to the line after leading most of the way.

Mark Newnham’s lightly-raced six-year-old won his maiden over a similar trip in Britain two years ago and has so far found the money in all six of his starts in Australia.

With a win on the board second-up, he should give the others something to catch in his first look at a Group 1.

Chapada

Chapada won the Group 2 Herbert Power at Caulfield over this same trip during the spring.

He’s mixed his form since returning to work but could be a touch over the odds after overcoming a wide barrier to finish only a length third to Homesman two runs back in the Australian Cup.

He found himself too far back last time out in the Mornington Cup (2400m) but did show plenty of toe in the late stages to make up ground for fifth.

With Tim Clark booked for the first time, he should be doing his best work late once again.

Nickajack Cave

Irish raider Nickajack Cave will make his Australian debut on Saturday in what will be trainer Peter Moody’s first Sydney starter in over six years.

The lightly-raced five-year-old hasn’t contested a race since August where he won the Group 3 Ballyroan at Leopardstown, which came less than a month after beating home Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment in a Listed race.

Moody has openly said he is targeting the Melbourne Cup with the promising stayer, but as the current market price suggests, he remains a bit of an unknown returning from a lengthy spell.

The mile and a half looks perfect for him, but it might be worth watching him go around first.

Angel Of Truth

Angel Of Truth steps out on the quick back up after just weakening out for third last week in the Ranvet behind Verry Elleegant and Addeybb.

There’s certainly no shame in coming off third-best to those two world-class stayers, and the short turnaround does indicate the Hawkes Team feels as though he’s pulled up in good nick.

The son of Animal Kingdom has won previously on the short backup and also claimed a memorable Group 1 win over this same trip two years ago in the ATC Derby at Randwick.

He hasn’t won a race since, but another place would come as no surprise.

Shraaoh

Shraaoh is having his second run back from a spell after finishing off only fairly for fifth in the Sky High Stakes.

He hasn’t contested a Group 1 in over a year, but with a win and three placings on the board, it’s fair to say he does his best racing second-up.

Melody Belle

Fourteen-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle has returned to Australia for the final time in the hopes of making amends for last year’s disappointment in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Trainer Jamie Richards has targeted the Tancred first-up for his talented mare, and it is no surprise to find her as the favourite with back-to-back winner James McDonald booked to ride for the first time.

Richards’ six-year-old mare has never raced over the 2400m previously, but the stable feel she’s been looking for the extra trip for a while.

There’s no doubt she has most of her rivals covered in terms of class and experience, and with another soft track expected, she rates as the one to beat.

She’s Ideel

She’s Ideel is looking to break a recent run ion placings since returning to work.

The Dundeel mare resumed for third first-up in the Millie Fox Stakes, before finishing an unlucky second to Missybeel at Randwick over the mile and third to Polly Grey last week in the Group 3 Epona Stakes.

Recent form alone suggests she can run a race at odds, but considering this is her first look at Group 1, she’s only worth entertaining in exotics.

Toffee Tongue

Toffee Tongue is looking to make it a double on Saturday after bolting in to win the Sky High Stakes two weeks ago by a nose to Spirit Ridge.

Chris Waller’s mare showed an enormous turn of foot over the final furlong to make up ground, and she’ll likely need to produce a similar effort getting out to 2400m for the third time.

The daughter of Tavistock struggled to see out this trip in last year’s Caulfield Cup but does get some relief at the weights.

Miami Bound

Miami Bound follows a similar script to The Chosen One as she returns on the quick backup following a luckless run last week in the Ranvet.

The former Oaks winner settled towards the rear of the field and never really got going on the rain-affected track.

She’s failed to finish anywhere close to the top five in her three starts this time in work and is tough to have based on those efforts.
