2021 Vinery Stud Stakes Preview

A classy field of three-year-old fillies will line up at Rosehill on Saturday in what is shaping up to be another exciting edition of the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

With the winner exempt from ballot for the Group 1 ATC Oaks later this month, the $500,000 feature holds plenty at stake for several trainers eyeing bigger races during The Championships later this month.

The Mark Newnham-trained Harmony Rose headlines the top of the market after running third to Lion’s Roar and Mo’Unga in the Randwick Guineas, but she’ll need to produce her very best with the likes of Hungry Heart and Personal also stepping out.

Personal

Personal has been a frustrating commodity for punters over the last 12 months, but she still remains a very consistent type capable of winning a race of this quality.

The filly by Fastnet Rock has now found the money in each of her last six starts, which includes a well-deserved win in the Oaks last year at Flemington that saw her gap her rivals by over a length.

She’s since returned to work to finish runner-up to Zou Dancer in The Vanity before flashing home late for third in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes over the mile.

The three-year-old was always going to be better suited over further, and although the wide gate leaves James McDonald with some work to do, she looks set to peak now in her third run back from a spell.

Harmony Rose

Harmony Rose couldn’t have been more impressive earlier in the month when she finished third to Lion’s Roar and Mo’unga in the Randwick Guineas.

Mark Newnham’s lightly-raced filly looked the winner at one stage over the final 200m before she was eventually grabbed by the winner close to the line.

Considering that was only her first look at a Group 1, there’s no question she can improve on that effort after drawing to get the gun run with Joshua Parr on board.

Back to her own sex now and seemingly wanting further, she’s the one to beat.

Hungry Heart

Hungry Heart put a couple of forgettable runs behind her earlier in the month when she wound up from the very rear of the field to take out the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes.

It didn’t appear as though the daughter of Frankel had come up the same horse that we saw during the spring, but it’s become pretty clear now that she’s looking for this journey after eating up the 1500m last time out.

Although unproven beyond the mile, she’s got plenty of fitness now on her side and has drawn to get a lovely run from midfield under Kerrin McEvoy.

It’s doubtful we see her settle as far back this time, but she should still be doing her best work late.

Starelle

Starelle has been freshened ahead of Saturday’s run after bolting in to take out the Group 2 Kewney Stakes from well back in the field to start the month.

The winner of the Kewney has gone on to win the Vinery four times in the past, the most recent horse to complete the double being Faint Perfume back in 2010.

Unlike a few others in the field, the daughter of More Than Ready has raced twice previously over the 2000m.

She finished off fairly for sixth over this trip in the Wakeful at Flemington during the spring, a run that has paved the way for her recent improvement.

So long as the rain stays away, you could argue that she is well over the odds.

Elizabeel

Elizabeel continues to flirt with another win having now found the placings in three of her last five starts.

John Sargent’s lightly-raced filly finished a clear second to Forbidden Love two runs back in the Group 1 Surround Stakes at Randwick before doing it tough for second from a wide position last time out in the Kembla Classic.

She’s yet to contest a race past the mile, but if the track plays to her liking, she’s a good bet to run a place based on recent efforts.

Miravalle

Miravalle finally scored her second career win last start in the Group 3 Kembla Classic where she made up a stack of ground from the rear to go on and win by a length.

After drawing gate 6, she maps to get a similar run on Saturday off the speed, although she won’t want to give away too big of a start with Harmony Rose likely to roll forward.

The daughter of Redoute’s Choice has raced twice previously over this trip, and like Starelle, was far from disgraced when fourth in the Wakeful at Flemington during the spring.

With two-time Vinery winner Hugh Bowman steering, she has definite each-way claims.

Force Of Will

Force Of Will is set to make her Australian debut on Saturday as she looks to extend her winning streak to five.

The New Zealand import obliterated her rivals to win the Group 3 Desert Gold at Trentham earlier in January before returning to win her next start by a narrow margin over the mile at Ellerslie.

It’s always tough to get a read on these internationals, but the $11.00 certainly looks a touch overs for a horse that beat the recent New Zealand Oaks runner-up by a comfortable margin two runs back.

Impecunious

Impecunious won on debut at Caulfield earlier in December and has been very unlucky not to go on with it since.

The filly by Sacred Falls struggled for room in the Group 2 Armanasco Stakes last month before finding some traffic down the straight in the Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill for third.

In saying that, she’s still managed to find the money in four of her five starts to date.

The wide barrier should give Damien Oliver a chance to get back and run on.

Love Sensation

Love Sensation heads back to Sydney looking to improve on her last start second over the mile at Moonee Valley in the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes.

Kevin Corstens’ filly has made nine starts for a win and three placings so far, while she also far from disgraced running seventh two runs back in the Surround Stakes.

She showed plenty of late speed in her last start and is worth a thought in exotics.

Princess Rhaenys

Princess Rhaenys returns from a freshen-up after winning her maiden at Ballarat last month.

She’s drawn to get a nice run off the speed from barrier 2, but this still looks tough with only two starts to her name.
