The Greatest Calls Of All Time

Here’s a list that you never knew you needed. Some of the greatest pieces of live commentary in Australian history.

Whilst most of the time we discuss horses at On the Drift, we are in the middle of the Tokyo Olympics so obviously we had to include them here. So, here’s a list of some of the greatest horse racing and Olympic calls.

Bruce McAvaney: Cathy Freeman – Sydney Olympics 2000

There couldn’t be more pressure on poor Cathy heading into the 400m final during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Finishing with silver four years prior in Atlanta, the Aussie great had the weight of a nation on her shoulders as she looked to go one better.

Bruce McAvaney, the voice of the Olympics, captured the moment perfectly. You could hear the desperation in his voice right throughout the call. With 80m to go he saw Cathy take the lead and he started barracking her home with a simple but stern “Cathy lifting”. Brilliant call.

Darren Flindell: Chautauqua – TJ Smith 2017

Every horse racing fan in Australia should know this call by the one and only Darren Flindell.

Going for his 3rd straight TJ Smith, the grey flash had a stack of work to do with less than a furlong to go.

His late charge to win is etched in Australian horse racing history with Flindell’s call making it even more memorable. He’s flying!

Ray Warren: Susie O’Neil – Sydney Olympic Trials 2000

Ray Warren. Rabs. Many refer to him as the voice of Rugby League, and rightfully so. But gee whiz his call of Susie O’Neil breaking a 19-year-old 200m Women’s Butterfly World Record in the 2000 Sydney Olympic trials might be some of his best work.

It was clear that Susie was going to take out the event, but she was neck and neck with the elusive World Record line. Rabs rose to the occasion and got Susie home in sensational fashion.

Greg Miles: Lonhro – Australia Cup 2004

This must be one of the most iconic horse racing calls of all time. Greg Miles painted the picture perfectly, when Lonhro was not once, but twice checked in the straight.

We rode the waves with Greg as Lonhro put in one of the great performances on the turf of all time. Go Lonhro go.

Jimmy Jacques: South Australian Harness Racing 2010

If you haven’t heard this call, do yourself a favour and watch the video below. Pure grit, determination and ticker shown from the voice of South Australian Harness Racing Jimmy Jacques.

An absolute must watch. Yatesy where are ya mate?!
