2021 Flight Stakes Preview

A field of 16 fillies will lineup at Randwick on Saturday to contest a wide-open edition of the Group 1 Flight Stakes over the mile.

The $750,000 feature is headlined by the Robert Heathcote-trained Startantes, who returns on the short backup following last week’s fifth in the Golden Rose Stakes.

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller has a typically strong hand in the race with She’s All Class, Hinged and Fangirl all lining up, while Gai Waterhouse will be hoping to win the race for a 10th time with Swift Witness.

Four Moves Ahead

Four Moves Ahead kicked home strongly to win the Tea Rose a fortnight ago thanks to a superb ride from Nash Rawiller.

The Snitzel filly produced a big turn of foot when something was asked of her down the straight, and she’ll likely look to roll forward again after drawing wide.

The John Sargent-trained Four Moves Ahead is fitter for three runs back and can be considered a major chance with soft track form to her name.

Mallory

Mallory has found the placings in her last two starts and looks ready for her first look at the mile now.

She overcame a wide run two back to finish third in the Furious Stakes, and then claimed second in a protest in the Tea Rose after being held up down the straight.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt has shown she can handle wet tracks before, and with even luck this time, she’ll be given every chance with the class of Hugh Bowman on board.

Swift Witness

Swift Witness looked to be a filly of ability when she won her maiden on the Gold Coast by three lengths.

She’s since gone on to win the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes in her return to the races last month, and showed real improvement on a flat second-up effort to run a place in the Tea Rose a fortnight ago.

The Star Witness filly had plenty of work to do last time out from a wide barrier, but she still showed plenty in the finish to suggest the mile will suit on Saturday,

With some decent wet track form to her name, she’s one of the better chances at odds.

She’s All Class

She’s All Class strips fitter for two runs back and gets the blinkers on for the first time.

The filly out of I Am Invincible failed to fire last time out in the Tea Rose where she got back in the run and never really let down.

She’s obviously a much better horse than that and is capable of running a place here with some fitness now on her side.

Startantes

Startantes heads Flight Stakes betting as the short-priced favourite following a brave performance for fifth last week in the Golden Rose.

The Star Turn filly flashed home on the inside after overcoming the wide gate, a performance that suggests she’ll handle the rise to the mile now from a much kinder barrier.

How she handles racing on the quick backup remains to be seen, but she’s very tough to knock on last week’s effort.

Latino Blend

Latino Blend returned from a freshen-up to run sixth in the Tea Rose two weeks ago and has plenty of scope for improvement.

She’s drawn to get a lovely run off the speed under Kerrin McEvoy and just might surprise a few.

Hinged

Hinged scored herself a hat-trick up in Queensland over the winter but was no match against the boys in the Listed Dulcify Stakes at Kembla Grange early last month.

In her first run for Chris Waller, the daughter of Worthy Cause got away awkwardly from the gates and was never really a threat from a three-wide position.

Could be worth forgiving on that run though and her Queensland form does suggest improvement is to come.

Von Trapp

Von Trapp won her maiden two back at Hawkesbury and bolted in to finish fourth in the Tea Rose.

She won’t want to give away a start again, but the way she finished off last time out suggests the mile will suit.

Chill

Chill won her maiden three back on the Kensington track and has been racing only fairly since stepping up in grade.

She failed to finish off in the Ming Dynasty at Kembla Grange for sixth, and battled on only fairly for fifth in the Tea Rose.

Tough to entertain based on those runs.

Yearning

Yearning dropped back in grade to claim her maiden at Newcastle last start after a disappointing finish in the Furious Stakes here at Randwick last month.

She’s raced well on rain-affected going and should suit the mile. Where she winds up from the wide barrier is the main concern, though.

Lovemetender

Lovemetender won her maiden first-up at Kensington in August but has struggled rising in grade.

She was no match in a Benchmark 72 last week at Rosehill and won’t find this any easier.

Fangirl

Fangirl has made only three starts to date, but she couldn’t have been more impressive last week winning her maiden at Goulburn by over five lengths.

She exploded with a huge turn of foot coming out of the turn, and if she can shuffle back early, she should prove a real threat in the late stages.

Never Been Kissed

Never Been Kissed won on debut at Hawkesbury and backed that up with an all-the-way win at Newcastle second-up.

She saw her unbeaten streak come to an end in the Tea Rose two weeks ago, but she should be better for it after fading late.

The Waterhouse and Bott-trained filly should roll forward and give her rivals something to catch.

Stray

Stray returns on the quick backup following last week’s effort for sixth in the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill.

The Anthony Cummings-trained filly looked as though she’d run a place at one point but struggled for room over the final furlong.

Can improve off that and is worth consideration for the minors.

Galactic Angel

Galactic Angel is yet to claim her maiden and looks severely outclassed here.

Left Reeling

Left Reeling has found the minor money in all four of her starts to date.

She finished second to Yearning at Newcastle last time out but is facing a big step up in class here.
