5 Lessons Learned – Victoria Derby Day

The 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival kicked off at Flemington on Derby Day and four Group 1 races headlined the program.

James McDonald rode four wins, Damien Oliver won two feature races and John Allen stamped himself as the Derby King aboard Hitotsu.

$7.5 million went on the line in Sydney with the third running of The Golden Eagle, and I’m Thunderstruck completed a stunning performance to record another lucrative win.

Here are our 5 lessons learned on Derby Day.

1 – Fangirl has a very bright future

Derby Day began with a bang as James McDonald pushed the button and Fangirl destroyed them in the Carbine Club Stakes.

The Sebring filly broke her maiden at Goulburn at the end of September and simply hasn’t looked back, winning the Listed Reginald Allen in Sydney before Saturday’s demolition job.

I wonder if Chris Waller is lamenting not tossing her into a Thousand Guineas…

2 – Godolphin are flying

Given the money and size of the operation you’d expect them to be more often than not, but it has been a very good Spring Carnival for Sheik Mohammad’s Australian arm, and the famous blue silks were on show a lot on Derby Day.

First, it was Willowy stamping herself as a genuine Oaks threat when finishing over the top of them in the Wakeful Stakes, before Isaurian was unlucky not to win the Linlithgow.

After that, Colette recorded the second Group 1 victory of her career in the Empire Rose!

Throw in the likes of Anamoe, Paulele and even Cascadian’s performance on Saturday and yep – it has already been a memorable season.

3 – Johnny Allen loves a Derby

John Allen has been back to his brilliant best this spring, winning the Ladbrokes Cox Plate last weekend most notably, before guiding Hitotsu to success in Saturday’s Victoria Derby!

The Irish hoop recorded his first Victoria Derby victory in 2018 aboard the Darren Weir-trained Extra Brut, and he has continued to add various Derbies to his CV all around Australia, notably three aboard Explosive Jack earlier this year.

Hitotsu’s performance and victory was particularly bullish, the sky looks to be the limit for the Maurice colt.

4 – I’m Thunderstruck is the best of his generation

There are many good four-year-olds currently in work in Australia, but I’m Thunderstuck stamped himself as the best by winning The Golden Eagle.

The Shocking gelding has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since debuting in January, and now boasts a record of 9:6-0-2.

He filled the minors of the Sir Rupert Clarke when resuming, broke through for his first Group 1 victory in the Toorak Handicap and added this biggest win of his career in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle. What four-year-old is better??

5 – Damien Oliver is something else at HQ

Ollie has well and truly wound back the clock this spring, but he was in particularly devastating form on Derby Day, riding his 24th and 25th Flemington Group 1 winners.

First, it was an incredible ride that saw Colette weave through the field and win the Empire Rose Stakes, and then we witnessed something similar when Superstorm won the Cantala Stakes.

The veteran hoop will ride the talented Delphi in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
