2021 Sydney to Hobart Tips and Preview

The Boxing Day Quaddie is back!

The Test, the races, snapping up a bargain at the sales and now the 4th leg, the Sydney to Hobart returns after it was cancelled due to COVID19 in 2020

It will be great to see the sights of the boats leaving beautiful Sydney Harbour once again.

This year’s event will see a fleet of 112 taking part with just the three Super Maxis chasing line honours with entries from Australia, Hong Kong, Monaco and Guernsey all taking part.

Just who will earn their place in Australian Sailing history?

We’ve studied the form and found a nice bit of value in our 2021 Sydney to Hobart Tips and Preview.

LINE HONOURS

SHAK Scallywag 100 @ $2.50

With Wild Oats XI out of the equation, the Hong Kong entrant SHAK Scallywag is the favourite to take it out in a highly competitive market.

Finishing fourth back in the epic 2019 Sydney to Hobart, along with some solid results in some recent events – such as winning the annual Big Boat Challenge this year.

The rivalry with Law Connect has most certainly kept things interesting out at sea of recent.

SHAK Scallywag looks well placed to get the top honours in this years race, and I’m on board.

Law Connect @ $2.75

The second-place getter in the 2019 Sydney to Hobart, Law Connect will look to make amends in this year’s race.

Recent contests between Scallywag and Law Connect has been something to behold this year, with the yacht able to beat it beat it by just under 60 mintues in the Cabbage Tree Island Race, but managed to be beaten by her biggest rical in the Big Boat Challenge.

Skipper Christian Beck and crew have wanted to jag a Sydney to Hobart for a fair while now, 2021 could just be the year they bring it home.

Black Jack @ $3

Previously known as Alfa Romeo, Black Jack managed a second over the line placing back in 2018.

Always thereabouts, Black Jack might just sail home should something go astray with the other two Super Maxi’s in the race.

Black Jack managed to take the lead in the Brisbane to Gladstone race this year, but an unfortunate dismast cost it the title.

While it hasn’t had as much sea time compared to the other two, Black Jack might just be a good value outsider play in this contest.

Back SHAK Scullywag @ $2.50

HANDICAP WINNER

Ichi Ban @ $3.40

Do we have a Sydney to Hobart Tattersalls Cup Handicap dynasty on our hands?

Since first setting sail in 2017, Ichi Ban has tasted success in 2017 and 2019, and the punters certainly favour it to make it a threepeat opening the betting at $3.40.

With two third place finishes behind two Super Maxis in two races already this year, there’s no reason why Matt Allen and his team can’t deliver a third handicap victory to Ichi Ban.
