10 Sports People With Racing Backgrounds

As part of our Ladbrokes Presents series we profiled former Fremantle Docker Hayden Ballantyne and his post football career of training race horses in Western Australia.

The star small forward grew up watching his father within the racing industry and has forged his own path after he retired from the AFL.

But he is certainly not the only sportsman to have an affiliation with the three codes of racing in this country, and below we have listed 10 Sports People With Racing Backgrounds.

10. Hayden Ballantyne

He was a crafty, and sometimes annoying, small forward when he wore the purple and white for Fremantle but he has traded those colours for red and white during his short training career.

If you own a horse with him maybe you can get some payback and constantly ring him and annoy him about how your horse is going?

9. Kevin Sheedy

What’s the easiest way to get involved in this great game other than having a punt? Owning a share of course.

The Richmond and Essendon legendary player and coach Kevin Sheedy hit the jackpot when he bought the last share available in a colt they named Bel Espirit for $13,000.

He was an exceptional race horse, winning two Group 1s during his career, but it was in the breeding barn where he made his mark on Australian racing forever.

When the equine flu hit Victoria it benefited Bel Espirit’s stud duties enormously and he set a mare covering record of 264 mares in a season.

One of the fillies he produced was Black Caviar.

8. Denis Pagan

He reinvented the game of football during his career as a coach, winning two premierships with North Melbourne and he is now training out of Flemington.

He achieved what most trainers only dream of when winning the 2020 Group 1 Victoria Derby with Johnny Get Angry and he did it after just four months of saddling his first runner!

Success like this early on, just like coaching in the AFL, is pivotal in forging a long career in this industry and It’s safe to safe Pagan has won himself some time.

7. Mark Waugh

He was one of the most elegant batsman when he filled the middle order with his brother Steve during his successful cricketing career but ‘junior’ has always had a love for racing.

He grew up not far from Warwick Farm race course and both his father and grandfather were to blame for his interest.

On Cox Plate Day 1992, Mark was chasing a low score of 150 with his brother Steve playing for Bankstown in club cricket.

Only one wicket down, and the total in sight, he played a very loose shot and got out so he could watch the race.

Naturalism fell and Super Impose stormed down the outside to win.

Of course, he is also married to Wyong trainer Kim Waugh!

6. Campbell Brown

Former Hawthorn premiership player Campbell Brown can not only blame his ‘white line fever’ on his old man Mal, but also his love of the great game as well.

He became a Group 1 winning owner when his mare Sweet Idea won the Group 1 Galaxy in 2015.

She also won the Magic Millions Guineas and over $2.3 million in prize money during her career.

Brown can now be heard giving ordinary tips and talking absolute rubbish on SEN Track.

5. Sir Alex Ferguson

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has a long history as an owner in British racing.

Despite the legal issues and circumstances that almost crumbled the Manchester United empire because of it, he owned the champion horse Rock Of Gibraltar.

The 2002 European Horse Of The Year who won seven straight Group 1 races during his race career and more than 1.2 million pounds.

4. Michael Owen

Former Liverpool and Manchester United superstar Michael Owen has dabbled in horse race ownership during his life.

He had a multi-million pound investment in Manor House Stables which he built and he even had a Melbourne Cup runner when his then five year old gelding Brown Panther ran in the 2013 race.

He ran 8th in that race but went on to win the Group 1 Irish St Leger in 2014.

3. Danny Frawley

The late, great Danny Frawley was not only loved within the rooms at Moorabbin and the greater football community, but harness racing was also a passion of his.

He was appointed to the Harness Racing Victoria board in 2016 and was instrumental with his media to promote to sport within his state and the wider country.

He even met his wife at the trots!

2. Tony Lockett

Some of the best sires in Australian greyhound racing and Tony Lockett’s named are very much linked.

He raced Hallucinate who won the Melbourne Cup and was sold for a then Australian record of $900k.

He owns the very successful sire Collision.

Brett Lee was also one of his.

1. Manny Gelagotis

Manny Gelagotis joined his brother Peter’s stable post his professional football career with the Gippsland Falcons in the NSL.

The stable has had some successful horses including Levendi, Malaguerra, Muorinho, Illustrious Lad and Moss N Dale.
