2022 The Championships Day 1 Preview

Some of the season major Grand Finals will be contested on The Championships Day 1 at Royal Randwick this weekend.

The rail will remain in the true position around the entire course while at publish, we’re faced with another track rated in the Heavy (10) range.

Race 1 - 12:10pm AEDT

Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m)

Semillion can win this year’s Kindergarten Stakes.

The Team Hawkes-trained colt won the Inglis Banner on debut in October and was immediately put away, and he returned nice efforts in the Blue Diamond Prelude and Blue Diamond when resuming this year.

He has been freshened since his last appearance and on exposed form, he’s certainly the one that I want to be with.

Race 2 - 12:45pm AEDT

Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)

Straight Arron can return to winning form in the Carbine Club Stakes.

The Fastnet Rock gelding stamped himself as a galloper to follow with an eye-catching win on debut at Ladbrokes Park in January, and he only just missed when resuming at Warwick Farm last week.

This is a rise in class, but he harbours plenty of upside, the mile looks ideal, and James McDonald retains the ride.

Race 3 - 1:20pm AEDT

Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m)

The Adrian Knox Stakes is a typically open affair, and there is a case to be made for many of these three-year-old fillies, including Chenin.

Chenin has made just three appearances at the races so far, but she has continued to improve with each start, and she was rewarded with a dominant win at Hawkesbury last time.

This is obviously harder, but getting out to 2000m looks ideal at this point of her prep, and we can have an each-way play at around the $11 mark.

Race 4 - 1:55pm AEDT

Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m)

He is on a short back-up, but Stockman was nothing short of outstanding when second behind Duais in the Tancred Stakes earlier this week, and he can win the Chairman’s Quality.

The Joe Pride-trained stayer proved far too good for his rivals in the Sky High Stakes two starts back, and he franked that performance in Monday’s Group 1.

He grows another leg on the Heavy going, he’s rock-hard fit, and he looks a touch of overs in my opinion at $8.

Race 5 - 2:35pm AEDT

Country Championships Final (1400m)

Edit is the one that I want to be with in this year’s Country Championships Final.

The son of Swiss Ace has been a strong and consistent performer for the Cody Morgan stable since arriving in Australia, and he takes his place this week following an eye-catching second in the Scone Wildcard Qualifier last week.

He harbours plenty of improvement and is drawn to receive a lovely run.

Race 6 -

Group 1 Inglis Sires' (1400m)

He is a maiden and has made just two appearances at the races so far, but I have been really impressed with what I have seen of Magic, and I’ve put him on top in the Inglis Sires’.

He is regally bred, and Magic debuted with an impressive effort for second in the Silver Slipper, before overcoming poor luck in running to fill the minors in the Pago Pago Stakes last time.

I like that Team Hawkes elected to miss the Slipper and target this race, and the $13 about him at publish looks outstanding value.

Race 7 - 3:55pm AEDT

Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m)

Hitotsu has proven himself to be an outstanding racehorse, and I am confident that he can record a third career Group 1 victory in the Australian Derby.

He hinted at talent during his two-year-old season, but last spring’s prep was absolutely the making of Hitotsu, and he went to the paddock after winning the Victoria Derby.

I thought he’d be a little too vulnerable to win the Australian Guineas first-up, but he proved me wrong, and he’ll only improve second-up and out to a staying trip.

Race 8 - 4:35pm AEDT

Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m)

He is still my favourite sprinter, and I confident that William Pike returning to the saddle will also see Masked Crusader return to winning form in the TJ Smith Stakes.

The Toronado gelding owned one of the standout performances of last year’s Autumn Carnival when he destroyed his rivals in the William Reid, and he was unlucky not to progress to a win in this race a fortnight later.

While he is yet to show his best in two starts back this time, I think that he will relish the conditions of this race, and he too is over the odds at around the $10.

Race 9 - 5:15pm AEDT

Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m)

I concede that Forbidden Love is flying, and it will take a herculean effort to topple the three-time Group 1 winner, but I also believe that Private Eye is good enough to pull it off in the Doncaster Mile.

Private Eye went to another level during his spring prep in 2021, and won the Epsom Handicap over this route, most notably.

He has stripped fitter for two decent efforts back this time, and he is ready to peak third-up and out to his pet trip – he just needs some luck in running after drawing the carpark!

Race 10 - 5:50pm AEDT

Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m)

This certainly isn’t the easiest way to end Day 1 of The Championships from a betting perspective and at publish, we’re faced with $6 the field in the PJ Bell.

That being said, it’s obviously a great opportunity for value if we can find it, and I’m going to have something on Victorian Sneaky Five.

Sneaky Five won each of her first three career starts, all feature races, and went to the paddock in spring after suffering her first career defeat in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes.

She clearly needed her first run back this time with fifth, beaten over three lengths in the Inglis Sprint, but she has been back to the trials since that effort, and Jamie Kah has been booked to ride this week.
