2022 Karrakatta Plate Day Preview

Black-type racing continues this weekend in Perth with the running of the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate at Ascot.

We’ve run the rule over the entire nine-race card and offer our best bets below.

Race 1 - 2:22pm AEDT

Westspeed Platinum Autumn Series Heat (1100m)

Siding with Leica Jaguar for the second week in a row after running on for third over a touch shorter last Saturday.

He took a little while to get going after settling midfield but was still strong through the line finishing only two lengths off Snipillicious.

Ran well for fourth over the track and trip two runs back and the stable clearly think he’s pulled up well enough to race on the quick backup.

2 Units Leica Jaguar

Race 2 - 3:02pm AEDT

Schweppes Handicap (1100m)

State Of Power is untried over 1100m but I think she might be looking for it now at this stage of her prep.

Simon Miller’s lightly-raced filly won by half a length two runs back and was seen doing her best work late to finish runner-up behind Saturday’s rival Metallion in her latest.

Tipping Chris Parnham parks her a little closer to the speed this time and she should be just as strong late.

Race 3 - 3:39pm AEDT

Crown Perth Handicap (1400m)

Otheroneson kind of picks himself here.

The son of Demerit was a clear three-length winner over 1400m at Belmont back in January before resuming from a freshen-up to run second at Ascot over shorter.

The form out of his last start reads well with third place getter Blue Line going on to win at Mount Barker last week, and from barrier 2, Otheroneson should have no problem rolling forward and giving his rivals something to catch.

3 Units Otheroneson

Race 4 - 4:18pm AEDT

Listed Old Comrade Stakes (1600m)

Hard to go past Son Of A God in the Comrade Stakes.

Simon Miller’s gelding won the Listed Grandstand Stakes by a clear margin a few weeks ago over shorter and looks ready for his first look at the mile fourth-up from a spell.

In what is a fairly thin race, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of speed engaged, so he should have no problem rolling to the front and doing what he does best.

2 Units Son Of A God

Race 5 - 4:55pm AEDT

Amelia Park Lamb Handicap (1400m)

Time Scale is a consistent type that really hasn’t run a bad race over the last few months.

The daughter of Press Statement was a track and distance winner by over a length two starts back, and she was only gunned down late after looking the goods a couple of weeks ago in a similar race .

Barrier 2 should see her stalk the speed this time around, saving her best for late.

2 Units Time Scale

Race 6 - 5:35pm AEDT

Amelia Park Beef Handicap (1000m)

She’ll need a touch of luck from the gate, but this is a very winnable race for the Simon Miller-trained How’s The Serenity.

The daughter of Magnus has returned an absolute peach this time in work, winning two back over 1200m by five lengths before getting a little wayward down the straight a few weeks ago running third.

Back to 1000m should help her cause, she gets in well with the claim, and if she slots across early, she’ll be tough to hold out.

2 Units How’s The Serenity

Race 7 - 6:14pm AEDT

Group 2 Amelia Park Karrakatta Plate(1200m)

Siding with unbeaten filly Amelia’s Jewel in the feature.

This impressive two-year-old won by a clear margin on debut last month and proved it was no fluke taking out the Gimcrack Stakes by 2.5L a couple of weeks later.

Might need some luck from the draw, but she’s got a serious edge on most of these and also gets 2kg’s off under Patrick Carbery.

Promising horse with a clear turn of foot, and the barrier should actually help her get back and save her best for late.

4 Units Amelia’s Jewel

Race 8 - 6:50pm AEDT

Amelia Park Wines Handicap (1400m)

Comes A Time finally rewarded punters’ patience with a handy win over the track and distance a few weeks ago.

Chris Parnham proved the difference in the saddle as he settled midfield before stoking up out wide at the turn.

He maps to get a similar run in transit here from an almost identical gate and there’s no reason he can’t go on with it now with fitness on his side.

2 Units Comes A Time

Race 9 - 7:25pm AEDT

Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1800m)

Taking a flier on Sowar, who comes off a last-start win over 2100m a few weeks ago.

The son of Sepoy has won over this track and distance previously, and the way he hit the line last time out suggests he’ll be hard to hold out.

Paul Harvey jumps back in the saddle and the pair should be able to save their best for late from the wide draw.

1 Unit E/W Sowar
