2022 Australasian Oaks Preview

Group 1 racing shifts to South Australia this Saturday for the running of the $500,000 Australasian Oaks.

A capacity field of three-year-old fillies will step out over 2000m, and it is the Snowden-trained My Whisper who looks set to go around as favourite in a bid for her fifth consecutive win.

The scratching of Group 1 ATC Oaks winner El Patroness has made this race even more wide-open, and there really is a case to be made for almost three-quarters of the field.

If you need help narrowing it down, be sure to read our 2022 Australasian Oaks Preview below.

1. Barb Raider (14)

  • Record: 10-4:2:2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Jerome Hunter
  • Jockey: Craig Williams
  • Odds: $15.00

Won the Group 3 Vanity and Group 2 Kewney Stakes back to back at Flemington to open her prep. Gave good chase when runner-up in the Sunlike Stakes at The Valley but was no match for Shout The Bar. Worth forgiving on her latest run in the Queen of the Turf on a heavy track at Randwick and is poised to return to form.

3. Daises (17)

  • Record: 9:2-1-1
  • Track: 1:0-0-1
  • Distance: 2:1-1-0
  • Trainer: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr
  • Jockey: Mark Zahra
  • Odds: $8.50

Finished strongly through the line for third in the Port Adelaide Guineas last time out. Bolted in from midfield to win the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes at The Valley the run prior and looks as though she’s wanting 2000m now. Previous winner over this trip and just needs a touch of luck from the barrier to be a serious factor.

4. Bon’s A Pearla (5)

  • Record: 10:2-2-2
  • Track: 1:0-1-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Kevin Corstens
  • Jockey: Jack Hill
  • Odds: $9.00

Untried at 2000m but has to be respected on recent form. Third to Hitotsu in the Australian Guineas last month before back-to-back runner up’s to Daises and My Whisper respectively in Group 3 company. Plenty fit now at this stage of her prep and should be better off with a run at Morphettville under her belt now. Maps to get back and should be strong late.

5. Douceur (15)

  • Record: 12:2-2-2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-1
  • Trainer: Patrick Payne
  • Jockey: Michael Dee
  • Odds: $13.00

Worth forgiving on her recent run at Caulfield where she pulled up lame. Was good the start prior when third to Daises at The Valley and had little go her way fresh at Flemington. Strips fitter for all three runs and did run a place over this distance in the Wakeful during the spring. Rates a decent each-way chance.

6. My Whisper (3)

  • Record: 5:4-0-0
  • Track: 1:1-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Peter & Paul Snowden
  • Jockey: Jamie Kah
  • Odds: $4.00

Winner of four straight that is well-deserving of her status as favourite. Put the writing on the wall with a comfortable win first-up at Kilmore and went on with it winning back-to-back starts at Sandown under Jamie Kah. Overcame a wide run in transit to salute in the Auraria Stakes last time out over Bon’s A Pearla and is racing like 2000m will suit now. The one they have to beat.

7. Mac ‘n’ Cheese (18)

  • Record: 8:3-2-1
  • Track: 3:2-0-1
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy
  • Jockey: Barend Vorster
  • Odds: $11.00

Promising type that hasn’t really put a foot wrong this time in work. Won back-to-back starts against easier company and was strong late out wide in the Auraria for third behind My Whisper. Looks set to peak now in her fourth run back and shouldn’t be underestimated despite the gate.

8. Mamounia (20)

  • Record: 7:2-1-1
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 2:1-0-1
  • Trainer: James Cummings
  • Jockey: Damien Oliver
  • Odds: $13.00

Lightly-raced daughter of Medaglia d’Oro that does look capable of running a nice race at odds. Won the Galilee Final at Caulfield over further a couple of weeks ago and now heads south for the first time looking to make it a double. Has won and placed over this trip previously and the recent form of Damien Oliver is hard to fault.

9. Fortunate Kiss (4)

  • Record: 10:2-1-1
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Daniel Bowman
  • Jockey: Harry Coffey
  • Odds: $21.00

Won three back at Flemington over 1400m and has been unlucky not to run a place in her two most recent starts. Chased well to run fourth at Caulfield over the mile a couple of weeks ago but is facing a tougher assignment here.

10. Glint Of Hope (2)

  • Record: 8:1-3-3
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-1-0
  • Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
  • Jockey: Daniel Moor
  • Odds: $10.00

Gapped her rivals by two lengths at Pakenham three back over 1400m and has found the placings in two runs since. Ran a clear second to Daisies in the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield during the spring and has drawn to get back and run on under Daniel Moor. Must have in multiples.

11. Lady Chant (12)

  • Record: 5:1-2-1
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Odds: $51.00

Raced from second-last to first in the WA Oaks two back and was far from disgraced WATC Derby a few weeks ago. Drops back to 2000m now with the blinkers on for the first time. Could run well at odds.

12. Ancient Girl (1)

  • Record: 8:3-0-1
  • Track: 1:1-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Clinton McDonald
  • Jockey: Ethan Brown
  • Odds: $41.00

Winner of the Morphettville Guineas three back but has only been plain in two runs since. Held up for a run last time out at Caulfield over the mile and is capable of much better.

13. Pretty Amazing (19)

  • Record: 5:3-0-0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Damien Thornton
  • Odds: $17.00

Claimed her hat-trick at Goulburn two back in the Kembla Grange Classic winning by a length. Went to Newcastle two weeks later and found the 1800m tough going in the Vinery Stud Stakes finishing 12 lengths off. Probably got a little too far back that day and is worth forgiving back to a firmer track. Needs luck from the barrier but out of a leading stable, a win wouldn’t shock.

14. So You See (10)

  • Record: 4:1-1-0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Jamie Mott
  • Odds: $12.00

Won her maiden by over fourth lengths at Pakenham on debut and has been around the mark rising through the grades. Luckless at Flemington and The Valley and probably deserved to win again at Sale last time out over the mile. This is tougher, but the blinkers go on for the first time and a top five finish could be in order.

15. Stray (13)

  • Record: 10:1-0-0
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey:Jake Toeroek
  • Odds: $31.00

Won first-up at Kensington and has mixed her form since. Struggled on heavy going in the Vinery Stud Stakes two back at Newcastle and clipped heels down the straight here at Morphettville last time out. Another one that can bounce back at a nice price.

16. Morrissette (7)

  • Record: 8:1-0-1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Simon Ryan
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $41.00

Clear maiden winner two back and didn’t have a lot go right from the wide barrier in the Auraria Stakes last time out. Strips fitter for both runs and would probably appreciate a little sting out of the track.
