AFL 5 Lessons Learned – Round 11 2022

Common sense, comebacks, upsets and beltings.

Plenty of lessons were learned over Round 11.

It’s time to put five of them together in a five-leg multi of hindsight we like to call FIVE LESSONS LEARNED.

(1) No such thing as a safe lead*

If the recent federal election taught us anything, there’s no such thing as a safe seat and in the world of AFL footy – there’s no such thing as a safe lead.

Richmond found themselves five goals up in the third quarter on Friday night, not before Buddy and the Swans stormed home.

Brisbane gave the Giants a head start on Saturday arvo, before the Lions got the job done.

Melbourne was 30-points up at half-time against Freo, before the Dockers beat their winning streak.

On Sunday when the Magpies looked to be home – the Blues fought back in red time to go down in a thriller between old rivals.

The 6-6-6 rule is here to stay, is resulting in nail-biting finishes with centre clearances the main focus and footy is better off for it.

Perhaps the Punters can keep an eye out on the live markets when looking for some serious values if these kinds of momentum swings keep occurring.

(*Safe leads still apply when playing West Coast or North Melbourne)

(2) No such thing as common sense

Arms out, umpire dissent, free kicks galore, handing out 50-meter penalties like the Black Thunders hand out icy cold cans of coke.

The AFL is giving some local councils a run for their money in terms of pedantic rules within rules within rules.

Say what you like about the finish to Friday nights Swans v Tigers thriller at the SCG, but an ending like that ruined the buzz of a memorable game.

“Common sense” may have been the logic not to pay that 50 to Dion Prestia, but all the Punters want is a bit of consistency.

Perhaps it’s time for the AFL to implement a bit of “No Frills Footy” because every weekend seems to be ruined by common sense not being applied.

No one wins out of this, especially the umpires.

(3) Melbourne bleeds and Flagmantle is a thing

Turns out Melbourne can be beaten!

To use another political analogy, in the words of former Prime Minister/Treasurer Paul Keating perhaps Saturday was the loss Melbourne had to have.

The Dees 17-game winning streak ended on Saturday night, when Freo went BANG in the second half kicking eight goals in the third quarter in what was one of the more dominant Docker displays.

A special shout out to the 10 Ladbrokes Punters who managed to take Freo at $23 at half time in our live markets, including one who put $350 on the Dockers only to cash out during the 4th quarter.

Perhaps these Punters also believe in Flagmantle?

The Dockers are now $10 to win this years premiership.

(4) Suns can make the eight

After Round 11, the Gold Coast Suns are five wins, six losses and gaining much respect in the process.

All talk about Clarko coaching them next year can be put in the bin, all roads lead to the Suns giving Stewy Dew a contract extension.

A favourable draw towards the second half of the season, facing North Melbourne in Darwin this weekend as $1.06 favourites and a bit of momentum and they might find themselves in September.

The Gold Coast Suns are currently $4.50 to make the eight.

(5) Woeful West Coast

West Coast is terrible.

Forget COVID, forget injuries -these excuses need not apply.

Travelling to Perth to play the Eagles was once the most feared fixture in footy, now it’s a lovely holiday and percentage booster for the likes of the Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

The Eagles percentage is 49.7 and West Coast looks on track to be the worst team since GWS in 2013 or Fitzroy in 1996 – at least the Roys in 96 had perfectly good reason to struggle on deaths door.

However, with both the Eagles and North fighting it out for 17th and 18th spot on the ladder, the market is for wooden spoon is highly competitive with the Eagles even money at $2 and North $1.80

At $2 to win the Wooden Spoon, West Coast is as good a futures bet you can make right now.
