2022 Flemington Finals Day Preview
Another quality nine-race card has been assembled this Saturday at Flemington to celebrate Finals Day.
The track is currently rated a Soft 6, the rail remains in the true position, and our best bets can be found below.
Race 1 - 11:50am AEDT
Zousonic doesn’t win out of turn, but she’s definitely got the engine to make a mess of these if she finds the clear.
Matt Cumani’s mare was only 2.5L off Bella Rouge two back over the track and distance, and I thought she ran a much-improved race when runner-up two weeks later where she was seen doing her best work late.
She’s likely to peak now at this stage of her prep and with the right ride, she’ll be hard to hold out.
1 Unit Zousonic
Race 2 - 12:25pm AEDT
This is quite a tricky race, but I’m happy to back Chaseton following his brilliant debut win at Geelong a few weeks ago.
Peter Moody’s two-year-old went forward that day on the bottomless track and found something extra when asked, winning by an impressive three lengths under Luke Nolen.
He’s retained the ride for this, and from an identical barrier, I think we’ll see similar tactics.
2 Units Chasteon
Race 3 - 1:00pm AEDT
Happy to have the favourite Wrote To Arataki on top here.
Matthew Williams’ three-year-old was a dominant winner when resuming at Sandown to start the month, beating home Place Of Gold, who has since gone on to run second at Caulfield last week.
She never really got a chance at them at Bendigo a fortnight ago in a race controlled by Brookline, but that was on a Heavy 8, so forgive. She’s still a slight query on top of the ground, but hard fit now, drawn kinder, and with some weight off, she’ll be hard to beat.
2 Units Wrote To Arataki
Race 4 - 1:35pm AEDT
Tough race to feel confident in with a wide range of chances, but I do like Winning Big at the each-way price.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock ran sixth to Grinzinger Bishop on debut a fortnight ago where she was seen motoring home along the rail after being held up a little at the top of the straight.
She’s still got some work to do, but drawn identically in barrier 10 with Daniel Moor retaining the ride, a place isn’t out of the question.
1 Unit E/W Winning Bid
Race 5 - 2:15pm AEDT
It feels as though Texas Tea has a class edge over most of these.
Despite the result, the lightly-raced three-year-old out of the Maher and Eustace camp ran a strong race in the South Australian Derby two back, a performance he improved on when winning here at Flemington last start in dominant fashion over 2000m.
After cruising to the line, 2500m looks ideal for him now, and he should be able to enjoy a much more patient ride behind the speed under Jye McNeil.
2 Units Texas Tea
Race 6 - 2:55pm AEDT
Hard to fault Maserartie Bay’s recent resume of three wins from his last four starts.
The only recent blemish was when he ran seventh in the Warrnambool Cup where he had genuine excuses racing on a Heavy 10.
He’s since made amends coming out and winning here at Flemington over a similar distance off a break, and I quite like the fact he’s been kept fresh here. He’ll again look to make his own luck on the speed, while the fact Jye McNeil has won on him previously is also a big tick.
2 Units Maserartie Bay
Race 7 - 3:30pm AEDT
We’re getting a nice price for Sartorial Splendor in what is a very open race.
The son of Brazen Beau resumed here at Flemington two weeks ago where he finished second to Zac De Boss after leading most of the way. He just lacked some fitness in the dying stages, but everything about that run suggested he’s come back in great order.
He’s a previous Flemington winner, and most importantly, gets a couple of kg’s off looking to go one better.
1 Unit Sartorial Splendor
Race 8 - 4:10pm AEDT
There’s a case to be made for a few in the feature, including last week’s Randwick Civic Stakes third place-getter, Looks Like Elvis.
Jarrod Austin’s old boy has been racing well so far this prep, winning first-up here over 1400m before challenging late along the rail last week thanks to a brilliant ride from Keagan Latham.
Out to the mile looks ideal now, a distance he’s won over twice in the past, while he’s also been successful on the short backup earlier in his career. Linda Meech was responsible for that first-up win and climbs back in the saddle with a couple of kg’s off.
1 Unit Looks Like Elvis
Race 9 - 4:40pm AEDT
You have to respect Grahame Begg’s decision to return a week later with Cardinal Gem.
This three-year-old by Choisir won rather well at Caulfield last week, storming home from a three-wide position with seemingly plenty left to spare when crossing the line.
Off that, the mile looks no issue, and he’s also found the money on a couple of occasions here at Flemington in the past.
