2022 John Deere Classic Preview

Another exciting conclusion to the Travelers Championship is officially in the books as we now turn our attention north to Illinois for the time-honoured John Deere Classic on Friday (AEDT).

Given the current state of professional golf, it’s no surprise to find this week’s field a little short on elite talent with several big names either off resting or playing overseas.

In short, that has made betting on what is typically a wide-open tournament like the John Deere even more impossible, with current market headliners Webb Simpson, Adam Hadwin, and last week’s co-runner-up, Sahith Theegala at the shortest odds.

Still, the John Deere has given berth to some recent champions of the game, while it’s also an ideal form guide for those looking ahead to the fourth and final major, The Open Championship, in a month’s time.

Who will prevail this week at TPC Deere Run? Best bets, value, and roughies in our preview below!

John Deere Classic Best Bet

Adam Hadwin $17.00

The Canadian has been a popular bet of mine over the last few weeks, particularly at his home tournament where he finished strongly to fall just outside the Top 30. I stayed away a week later at Brookline when he, of course, went on to finish T7 thanks to a brilliant opening round 66. Skipping The Travelers last week ensures he’s well-rested, but I also think statistically, Hadwin is a perfect fit for TPC Deere Run. This course calls for consistent iron play and approach, two areas Hadwin has excelled in this year. He shared in a tie for eighth here back in 2016, so there’s plenty to like.

John Deere Classic Best Value

Patrick Rodgers – $29.00

Rodgers has been a popular pick this week, and for good reason. He’s once again flirting with a big breakthrough, finishing inside the Top 35 at the Charles Schwab, Canadian Open, and US Open. Stats wise, he’s been one of the more consistent putters on TOUR, while he’s also the kind of golfer that suits a shorter course like this. Throw in a runner-up here in 2020, and you have all the makings of a good value bet.

C.T. Pan – $51.00

As already mentioned, Strokes Gained: Approach has been a very strong statistic when it comes to TPC Deere Run. This course is a little on the short side, but there’s a ton of room for error on the fairways, so this weekend should suit those with a little more precision in their game. The first name that comes to mind in this instance probably isn’t C.T. Pan, but you might be surprised to learn the Taiwanese national leads the way over the last 24 rounds in the category. He missed the cut here last year but did finish just outside the Top 30 back in 2018.

John Deere Classic Best Roughies

Zach Johnson – $81.00

If you’re looking for a horse for the course, look no further than the 2012 winner. These days, Johnson doesn’t look up to competing in the top tournaments, but he’s been absolute money at TPC Deere Run, making the cut in 17 of his 18 appearances since 2003. His recent Top 25 finish at the Charles Schwab isn’t anything to get excited about, but those numbers above make him worth a small bet this week.

Hayden Buckley – $101

This tournament is completely wide-open, so why not take a flyer on a guy that just finished T14 at the US Open? Of course, Buckley followed that up at River Highlands last week falling outside the Top 40, but I don’t think that result does him justice when you consider he carded three rounds of 69 and under before the final day. Gaining strokes off the tee has been his biggest strength this year, and with plenty of upside to come, I’m happy to have him on my bet slip this week.
