2022 Darwin Cup Day Preview

A stacked 10-race card has been assembled at Fannie Bay on Monday for one of the best occasions on the country calendar: Darwin Cup Day.

We’re in for a picture-perfect day up in the Northern Territory, and with no shortage of value to be found, we’ve got you sorted with some of our best bets below.

Race 1 - 12:37pm AEDT

Schweppes Handicap (1200m)

Patria looks ready to win now in his third run back for Gary Clarke.

The old boy by Exceed and Excel is a seven-time winner on his home track, while he’s been around the mark over the last month running fourth and third behind a handful of smart horses.

Jarrod Todd has options from gate 3 and I expect the pair to stalk the speed in the early stages.

Race 2 - 1:17pm AEDT

Harvey Norman TROBIS Handicap (1200m)

Akoni was an impressive winner of his maiden last month where he rolled forward early and raced away to win by three lengths.

He’s been kept fresh for the run with Jarrod Todd retaining the ride, and from another ideal draw, there’s no reason he can’t go on with it.

This is slightly tougher, but there doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed on paper, so I suspect he’ll be able to push forward again and run this on his terms.

2 Units Akoni

Race 3 - 1:52pm AEDT

0-66 Handicap (1100m)

Winning form is good form, and that’s exactly what Rising Sphere brings with him on the short backup.

The Gary Clarke-trained five-year-old went around as the favourite last week where he raced away under hands and heels at the top of the straight over the same tack and distance.

The decision to return on the five-day backup warrants plenty of respect and there’s no reason he can’t win again.

2 Units Rising Sphere

Race 4 - 2:27pm AEDT

Seppelt Montgomerie Lightning Plate (1000m)

Ideas Man looks a step above most of these.

The son of Brazen Beau made it a hat-trick over the track and distance three weeks ago where he led all the way to win narrowly right on the line.

Dean Holland steps into the saddle for the first time and he’ll likely implement similar tactics in a race lacking depth.

2 Units Ideas Man

Race 5 - 3:05pm AEDT

Australian Turf Club Handicap (1600m)

Mangione has raced well without winning and just needs a touch of luck to go his way from the wide draw.

The son of Fiorente has finished top five in each of his four starts since resuming in June, and I thought he did well to nab a place last time out considering the amount of work he had to do racing wide.

He’s rock-hard fit now with four runs under the belt and we should see further improvement with the blinkers back on.

1 Unit Mangione

Race 6 - 3:42pm AEDT

G H Mumm Handicap (1600m)

Wolfburn basically picks himself here.

The four-year-old son of Snitzel is facing a much easier challenge coming off a runner-up performance in the NT Derby where he led for most of the way before being run down and beaten well by Venting.

Before that, he was a comfortable four-length winner over the mile, so the step back in trip is a huge positive, while he’s also drawn to get the dream run along the rail.

3 Units Wolfburn

Race 7 - 4:17pm AEDT

Ladbrokes Handicap (1300m)

Brimarvi Rooboy is a consistent type that looks ready to win again third-up.

Chris Pollard’s gelding raced away a narrow winner first-up over this track and trip and was seen doing his best work late under big weight last-start when fourth.

He’s a proven performer over this trip with four wins on the board and now gets the added class of Brad Rawiller steering in the saddle. The low draw is another big plus, and with the blinkers back on, I think he’s a huge threat.

2 Units Brimarvi Rooboy

Race 8 - 4:52pm AEDT

Magic Millions Handicap (1300m)

Kent Street was super brave last week leading all the way to score by a length over 1000m.

He returns on a quick turnaround back out to his preferred distance now, an d although this is tougher, I think he’ll have no problem finding the front again from the low draw.

He gets in with 3kg’s off his back under apprentice Sonja Wiseman, and at the current quote, he’s worth an each-way ticket.

1 Unit E/W Kent Street

Race 9 - 5:30pm AEDT

Silks Darwin Handicap (2050m)

Magnossiva’s recent form suggests another win might be around the corner.

The son of Magnus doesn’t win out of turn, but he did run a place in his first two starts last month prior to a game effort for fourth last week over the mile behind Living The Dream.

This is only his second look at 2050m, but he’s got plenty of fitness on his side now and a handy barrier to operate from.

1 Unit Magnossiva

Race 10 - 6:15pm AEDT

Great Northern Darwin Cup (2050m)

Playoffs has been kept fresh for the run after winning on debut here in Darwin over the mile nearly a month ago.

The Gary Clarke-trained son of Tavistock has done some of his best racing fresh, and although he’s got some work to do from the gate, he does look one of the main dangers getting out over further now.

Last-start NT Derby winner Venting also represents good value each-way. Horses that have won on this surface before tend to go well, and there’s no reason he can’t go on with it after beating Wolfburn home by nearly three lengths. With 4kg’s off, I’m happy to have him in my numbers.

2 Units Playoffs, 1 Unit E/W Venting
