2022 Wyong Gold Cup Preview

A huge weekend of racing kicks off early on Friday with the Listed Wyong Gold Cup.

A field of 12 has accepted for the $200,000 staying feature, including Chris Waller’s impressive five-year-old gelding, Lord Ardmore.

The champion trainer is hoping to win the race for a record eighth time after dominating in recent years with the likes of Cardiff and Wu Gok, while Hugh Bowman is also chasing his fourth win aboard the favourite.

The form out of the Wyong Cup has often stacked up in much bigger races later in the spring, including The Metropolitan. For our thoughts on every runner, check out our preview below.

1. Lord Ardmore (2)

Recent form impressive for this. Winer of back-to-back starts before a game effort at Randwick two weeks ago when third in the Premier Cup. Steps back in class now and should appreciate the rise to 2100m with Hugh Bowman sticking on board. Draws to get a gun run from the low gate and is the horse to beat.

2. Our Intrigue (7)

Returned from a freshen-up and was no match in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury. Form through the spring was good, including a win in the Port Macquarie Cup and a placing in the Matriarch at Flemington two starts later. Capable of much better but needs to improve.

3. Carif (8)

Hasn’t found the winner’s stall in close to two years and recent form makes for tough reading. Finished towards the tail in the Melbourne Cup and achieved a similar result in the Premier Cup two weeks ago. Tough to recommend.

4. Grove Ferry (5)

Strips fitter for two runs back and is attempting 2100m for the first time. Finished off well in the Premier Cup and was equally impressive first-up. Steps back to weaker class now and gets in well at the weights. Drawn to receive every chance from barrier 5 and he does have impressive form third-up.

5. Toomuchtobear (10)

Worth forgiving on his recent run when caught wide. Form prior was sound and he’s another one stepping back in class. Handles firm and soft tracks and should be hard fit now with three runs under the belt. Worth including in multiples.

6. Chalk Stream (3)

Beaten over 10 lengths first-up in the Premier Cup and will only find this harder.

7. Le Chevalee (1)

Won quite well first-up at Randwick in heavy conditions and stuck on well back to 1800m last month after being caught wide. Tends to race well with a gap between runs and has drawn to do no work along the rail. Genuine chance at a nice price.

8. Durston (11)

Ran last off a break in the Premier Cup but is capable of much better. Should show improvement on a quicker backup this time around and a firmer track will also be to his liking. Just needs luck from the wide gate.

9. Yiyi (6)

Just lacked the extra gear in the late stages last time out. Still finished well after racing wide and he does tend to take a few starts to warm into his prep. Untried over 2100m but should appreciate the class drop.

10. Mubariz (4)

Placed off a freshen-up at Rosehill back in July but has struggled in much tougher races since. Was too far back to threaten at Hawkesbury last time out and never really made up any ground in the finish. This only looks harder.

12. Dragon Dream (12)

Consistent type that has found the money in 10 of his 19 starts. Second over this trip at Gosford last Friday but is facing a big step up in grade.
