The Tramway Stakes is Group 2 race reserved for thoroughbreds three years and older with set weights and penalties. The race is organised by the City Tattersalls Club and runs over a distance of 1200m at Randwick Racecourse with prize money of A$250,000.

The race was introduced in 1886 as a principal race and was declared a listed race in 1979. It was promoted to a Group 3 status in 1983, and finally, in 2014, it was upgraded to a Group 2 race.

Tramway Stakes Preview and tips

The Tramway Stakes serves as a lead-up for the 1600m Group 1 George Main Stakes to be held 2 weeks later.

The last horse to win both was Sincero in 2011. The winner of the Tramway is also exempted from the Epsom Handicap balloting, a 1600m Group 1 race held at Randwick. The last horse to win the double was Hauraki in 2016.

The race comprises a line-up of top performers who go on to compete in George Main and later the Epsom Handicap.

It may also have runners from Winx Stakes or horses who are first-up in their preparation for the Spring season.

Top performers usually dominate the odds for the race in Sydney from previous runs. However, in recent years, the favourites have not lived up to expectations, with the exception of Dreamforce in 2019 and 2020 and Zaaki in 2021.

Runners with a good performance record at the Randwick that have put up a good show at previous 1400 to 1600m features have good prospects for Tramway. It is also a good idea to watch out for runners leading the early betting charts for the Epsom Handicap.
