2022 Epsom Handicap Day Preview

It’s one of the best days on the Australian racing calendar at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Our full 2022 Epsom Handicap Day Preview can be found below.

Race 1 - 11:50am AEDT

Group 3 Breeders' Plate (1000m)

The two-year-old juveniles head to the race track for the first time in the opening event of the day at Royal Randwick and I’m happy to just watch on.

Race 2 - 12:25pm AEDT

Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m)

Perfect Proposal could not have been much more impressive in her only trial leading into her debut.

She won by almost five lengths here at Randwick over 850m and I’m with the Gai Waterhouse trained filly to get the job done in the Gimcrack Stakes.

Race 3 - 1:00pm AEDT

Benchmark 88 Handicap (1600m)

Tamerlane has had his runs spaced out throughout this prep but has been racing consistently.

The five year old gelding has placed at his last couple at Caulfield and Rosehill and has drawn perfectly in barrier four for this event.

Arnold put together back to back wins before finding a couple better at Randwick last time out.

He was beaten just over half a length and I loved the way he kept finding right through the line.

Race 4 - 1:35pm AEDT

Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m)

The George Main Stakes that was won by Anamoe is the right form to follow going forward in my opinion and Montefilia was excellent when finishes fourth.

She is a top grade mare as proven when taking out the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes during the autumn and she has a truly great record second up from a spell.

She will have highest goals than this during the spring but she is the horse to beat in the million-dollar Hill Stakes.

Race 5 - 2:10pm AEDT

Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m)

I have a huge opinion of Flag Of Honour who made up considerable ground from the back of the field when resuming in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty at Rosehill.

He just knocked up the last 100m in that race when finishing four lengths off Golden Mile who has since gone on to run really well in the Golden Rose last weekend.

He’ll take plenty of benefit out of that run and Hugh Bowman will steer from barrier one.

Race 6 - 2:45pm AEDT

Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m)

The proven Group 1 winner or the filly on the rise.

This Flight Stakes does look a race in two between the Golden Slipper winner Fireburn and the last start Group 2 winner Zougotcha.

There was some concern to how Fireburn had returned as a three-year-old after a plain first up performance in the Run To The Rose but she was truly superb in the Golden Rose last weekend against the boys and she will appreciate the drop back to her own sex here.

Zougotcha has won both her starts this prep at Group 2 level and has earned her shot in the highest grade of race.

She is a filly with a big amount of upside and I don’t want to be losing if she wins the race.

Race 7 - 3:25pm AEDT

Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m)

Happy to take on the favourite Lost And Running who has come up very short in a race that is packed full of quality.

Mazu suffered defeat for the first time since September 2021 when resuming behind Nature Strip in The Shorts.

He had put together six wins in a row including the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 during the winter and he will take plenty of benefit out of that first up run.

Masked Crusader got a long way back in that same race, as he does, but his closing sectionals for some of the best in the race.

It has been a while in between wins but he is a horse that is capable of producing a high rating on his day and represents good value at his current price for the Premiere Stakes.

Race 8 - 4:05pm AEDT

Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m)

Hinged has been a very consistent mare and after winning the Group 1 Surround Stakes in the autumn, she finished top four in the Coolmore, Vinery Stud and ATC Oaks.

Both runs at Group 1 level this prep have been good including a third in the George Main where Icebath just went past her into second.

She meets that mare 2.5kgs better at the weights here and looks well rated in the Epsom Handicap.

Race 9 - 4:45pm AEDT

Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m)

A very even field of stayers line up in the Group 1 The Metropolitan but I’m with the proven horse rather than the ones on the rise.

Stockman finished second behind Duias in the the Group 1 Tancred Stakes during the autumn and he would have been set for this particular race during this prep.

Should be peaking now at his fourth run and any rain leading into this meeting will only increase his chances.

1 Unit E/W Stockman

Race 10 - 5:25pm AEDT

Benchmark 94 Handicap (1200m)

O’President trialled like he was ready to win a Group 1 at Rosehill, winning by a huge margin leading into his first up assignment.

He was the first horse beaten in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie however, but I refuse to believe he is going that badly especially considering his trial in between runs here.

He drops back to 1200m for this which is a good move and although he is a massive risk, we are getting double figures odds which suits me in the last of the day!
