2022 Turnbull Stakes Day Preview

Group 1 racing returns to headquarters this Saturday afternoon with a quality race card.

Our full 2022 Turnbull Stakes Day Preview can be found below.

Race 1 - 12:40pm AEDT

Listed Maribyrnong Stakes (1000m)

A lot of young horses having their first race start without any trials as a guide.

Happy to stay out and just watch.

Race 2 - 1:15pm AEDT

Listed Paris Lane Stakes (1400m)

Riddle Me That has come up over the odds in the second race of the day in my opinion.

The six year old gelding has not been seen at the races in almost 12 months both he is a classy individual at his best.

He was an impressive winner in a lead in trial by 2.5 lengths and the $23 available represents great value.

Race 3 - 1:50pm AEDT

Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m)

She’s Licketysplit made her Australian racing debut in the Thousand Guineas Prelude finishing third where she just knocked up late in the race.

She is already a Group 1 winner in New Zealand and while Sumatra ran past her last start, she meets that filly 3kg better at the weights here.

The step up to 1600m is of some concern but the blinkers go on for the first time and Flemington will suit her better than Caulfield.

Race 4 - 2:25pm AEDT

Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m)

If her first up run in the Let’s Elope Stakes was any to go on, Yearning is in for a huge prep.

The Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner was a long way back when turning for home at Flemington in that race and she produced some excellent closing sectionals to be beaten less than half a length.

She a very well bred and classy mare who has a heap of upside.

The one to beat.

Race 5 - 3:05pm AEDT

Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1100m)

I’m finding this an incredibly tough race to assess.

There were big wraps on Doull heading into his spring campaign but he was very disappointing first up at this track and distance.

He may very well bounce back but I will need to see it before he gets any of my money.

The unbeaten Giga Kick does look the obvious choice but has come up way too short at even money.

I’m watching on here.

Race 6 - 3:45pm AEDT

Group 3 Bart Cummings (2510m)

It’s really hard to go past Desert Icon who is racing in career best form at the moment and was a dominant winner at The Valley last Friday night.

That was the six year old’s second win in a row and he will bring a fitness edge over a lot of these into the race.

Drawn well in barrier two and Brett Prebble is riding exceptionally well right now.

Race 7 - 4:25pm AEDT

Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m)

Happy to take on the top two in the market in Duais and Gold Trip.

Young Werther has just one win from 12 career race starts but he is capable of a high rating performance on his as we saw when he finished second behind Incentivise in this race last year.

His first up run was excellent when finishing within two lengths of the winner at this track and he drops a massive 6.5kgs for that effort.

Maximal is another stayer with a poor winning record but plenty of upside and we saw his class through the winter carnival although he didn’t get the chocolates.

He’ll improve on whatever he produces but the connections are bullish about his chances in this race (listen to the latest episode of Moody On The Mic for more).

Race 8 - 5:05pm AEDT

Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m)

Roch ‘N’ Horse is clearly a horse that thrives down the straight here at Flemington with two starts at the track and distance for a win and a second.

That win came in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap in March but her first up performance in the Bobbie Lewis was full of merit.

She better for that run, and she looks really well placed in this particular race.

Race 9 - 5:40pm AEDT

Listed Super Impose Stakes (1800m)

I’m with the only filly in the Super Impose Stakes.

Pavitra has put together back to back wins in impressive fashion in NSW and she heads north in fantastic form.

She has more race experience, and fitness, than a lot of her male counterparts, and she represents great value if she continues to improve with racing into this event.

Blinkers go on for the first time.
