2022 Turnbull Stakes Preview

The Turnbull Stakes is run over 2000m at Flemington and is a good guide for the rest of the spring carnival.

The Turnbull Stakes/Caulfield Cup double has been completed 15 times and some champion horses have won the race including Wakeful (1903), Ajax (1938/40), Sunline (2001) and Winx (2018/19).

We have run through every runner in the race and our full 2022 Turnbull Stakes Preview can be found below.

1. Knights Order (14)

Won the Group 1 Sydney Cup to close out his autumn campaign and then won the Group 2 Chelmsford first up. Finished third in the Kingston Town Stakes last time out and drops half a kilo into this assignment. Yet to place from four attempts at headquarters.

2. Duais (5)

Put together back to back wins last prep including a win at this track and distance in the Group 1 Australian Cup. Her two runs so far this prep have been just ok but she has a fair amount of class and will be ready to peak at her third run.

4. Profondo (7)

First up run in the Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick when finishing third behind Anamoe was excellent but he has been just plain in his last couple. He’s come up very short and I’m happy to take him on.

5. Great House (15)

Comes into this race second up where he has a very good record having not missed a place from four attempts. Wasn’t beaten far first up but this is a huge leap in grade. Tricky barrier to overcome but has a good record here at Flemington.

6. Smokin’ Romans (6)

Impressive winner of the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield last time out having been narrowly defeated at The Valley prior to that. Has failed in two goes here at Flemington but has drawn beautifully in barrier six.

7. Milford (16)

Put together back to back wins at Caulfield before finishing well back here at Flemington last start. Would need to improve dramatically on that effort to be any chance.

8. Inspirational Girl

Has won 10 of her 18 career race starts including the Group 2 Blamey Stakes here at Flemington back in March. Finished second at The Valley behind Mr Brightside first up and is unbeaten in four starts second up. Worth considering.

9. Chapada (9)

Both runs this prep have been full of merit and was only beaten 1.5 lengths in the Group 3 Naturalism last start at this distance. Drops 1.5kgs on that effort and Flemington suits his racing pattern. Over the odds.

10. Alegron (2)

Earned a trip to Melbourne with a nice win in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes at Randwick second up from a spell. Won the Listed St Leger over 2800m here at Flemington earlier in the year and he should be ready to peak at his third run.

11. Young Werther (1)

Was second in the Australian Derby during his three-year-old season and finished second in this race last year behind Incentivise proving he has a fair amount of staying ability. Carried a huge weight when resuming over 1700m here at Flemington but loved the way he ran right through the line. Drops a massive 6.5kgs into this and will give this a real shake at nice odds.

12. Gold Trip (10

Has placed in both his runs so far this prep including a third in the Naturalism Stakes last time out. This is the imports first Australian campaign but he’s shown he has some ability and he will only improve on whatever he produces here. Has come up very short in the market in my opinion but is one of the leading chances.

13. Crystal Pegasus (8)

Put together four wins in a row during his last campaign but both runs this prep have been well below the level needed to be winning a Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. He has won twice from two attempts here at Flemington.

14. Luncies (3)

Was beaten less than a length in the Listed Andrew Ramsden here at Flemington in May and was narrowly denied first up in the Cameron at Newcastle. The blinkers go on for the first time but he has doubled his price since the market opened which is concerning. Wait and see how he parades on race day would be my advice.

15. Maximal (4)

Proved he has ability when finishing second in the Group 1 Doomben Cup behind Hueter, beaten less than half a length. Ran on okay in the George Main first up but I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes a big leap forward second up. Flemington will suit and he’s drawn to get a great run in transit from barrier four.

16. Surefire (11

Scratched from The Metropolitan in Sydney to run here which might mean he is going really well or needs the run before getting out in distance. Is a very progressive horse having won five of 11 career starts and he has a good record at 2000m. First go at headquarters but gets in well at the weights.

17. Hezashocka (17)

Has been placed in all five of his starts this prep which includes two wins. Both of those wins have come here at Flemington but he will need to go to a new level to be competitive in a field of this quality.
