Turnbull Stakes Preview

The Turnbull Stakes is a Group 1 classic race with set weights and penalties open for horses aged four and above. The race has a distance of 2000m and is worth $1 million in prize money. It is one of the most prominent features of the Spring Racing Carnival. The race was introduced in 1865, and it has run under many names since then. It has held a Group 1 status since 2010.

Many horses heading for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, and Melbourne Cup enter the Turnbull Stakes. In 2020, Verry Elleegaant won the Turnbull and then the Caulfield Cup. Verry Elegant also won the Melbourne Cup the following year.

In 2021, Incentivise won the race. He was the latest runner who had completed the Turnbull and Caulfield double and then ended in second place in the Caulfield Cup. The latest horse who won the Turnbull back-to-back was Winx in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

The betting odds for Turnbull Stakes usually favour runners with great form in previous Group 1 race features. Moreover, older gallopers around six years of age have dominated the race in recent years. Around six winners in the last ten years have been from this age category, including the famous two times winner Winx and Kings Will Dream, who won in 2019.

During the past fifteen years, favourites on the punter’s lists have only delivered six times, the most recent being Verry Elleegant in 2020. In 2021 she was the favourite again but finished fourth.

Good lead-ups for the Turnbull Stakes include Underwood Stakes held a week before and the Hill Stakes.
