2022 Kennedy Oaks Preview

The 2022 Melbourne Cup Carnival continues on Thursday with the time-honoured Group 1 Kennedy Oaks between the three-year-olds.

A promising field of 11 fillies has accepted for the $1 million staying feature, and it’s no surprise to find Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner She’s Extreme installed as a very short favourite.

Punters searching for value have no shortage of options with Zenzella, Pavitra, As Time Goes By, and Queen Air all returning on a quick backup following impressive runs in last week’s Wakeful Stakes over 2000m.

Who will become the next filly to stake their name in Oaks folklore?

Find our thoughts on every runner in our 2022 Kennedy Oaks Preview below!

1. She’s Extreme (1)

She’s Extreme is a proven Group 1 performer having competed against some of the very best over the last 12 months.

This Extreme Choice filly out of the Anthony Cummings yard was beaten nearly seven lengths in the Golden Slipper during the autumn, but she showed real improvement later in her prep to round things out with a dominant all-the-way win in the Champagne Stakes.

Wet tracks are her go in life, so she won’t mind any rain about. She was equally impressive coming from way back in the field to run a place in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick two weeks ago, and although this is her first look at Flemington, she is worthy of her status as favourite.

2. Zennzella (6)

Zenzella looks well-placed in search of her hat trick.

The Snitzel three-year-old won her maiden by a whopping five lengths on the synthetic at Pakenham and then proved that was no fluke taking out the Wakeful Stakes last week in a brave battle right to the line.

James McDonald has stuck with her and the pair map to push forward early and make their own luck on the speed.

This is her toughest challenge to date, but she warrants enormous respect on the quick backup. The Maher and Eustace team tend to get these decisions right with their stayers, and this girl is a genuine chance if the track stays in the soft range.

3. Renaissance Woman (8)

Renaissance Woman won the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield by nearly a length three weeks ago and was far from disgraced stepping back up to Group 1 level where she was beaten three lengths in the Spring Champion Stakes.

She probably deserved to finish even closer that day after copping some interference early and racing wide, a performance she can definitely build on stepping out over further.

Both of her wins have come on rain-affected going, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rachel King stays patient early to try and save her best for late.

4. Pavitra (10)

Pavitra hasn’t put a foot wrong in seven starts to date, finding the money on four occasions.

She strung together back-to-back wins at Kembla Grange and Newcastle earlier this prep and is another one racing on a quick turnaround after storming the line late to finish runner-up in the Wakeful last Saturday.

Jamie Kah was responsible for the ride when she placed two back at Caulfield  in the Ethereal. The pair have a slight job ahead of them from a tricky gate, but it’s hard to find fault in her form.

5. Foxy Cleopatra (9)

Foxy Cleopatra has made on the three starts to date, winning two back at The Valley by a comfortable margin before overcoming an awkward alley to grab a place in the Ethereal.

She’s a promising filly out of the Busuttin and Young yard that seems to have a serious turn of foot, but she just be lacking fitness in comparison to some of her rivals.

6. Let’sbefrankbaby (3)

Frankel three-year-old Let’sbefrankbaby gets her shot at the Oaks coming off a last-start fifth in the Wakeful on Saturday.

She did enormously well to finish where she did after settling towards the tail of the field, and I think we’ll see her a little more prominent here with Lachlan King retaining the ride.

7. As Time Goes By (5)

As Time Goes By is still searching for her maiden, but recent form suggests it might be just around the corner.

She finished off strongly for third in the Wakeful last week along the rail and stuck to the task in the Edward Manifold four weeks earlier for fifth.

The rise in distance might be just what she needs now and there’s definitely a case to be made for her as an each-way chance.

8. Queen Air (7)

Queen Air has improved with each start since debuting at Geelong in late September.

She came from the rear of the field to run fourth in both the Fillies Classic at The Valley and the Wakeful last week, and now returns on a quick backup for the second week in a row.

9. Sirius Princess (1)

Sirius Princess has mixed her form in four runs for trainer Trevor Andrews.

She resumed in nice order to run a place in much weaker company at Geelong to begin her prep but was beaten six lengths in the Geelong Classic three weeks ago.

Needs to improve drastically to be a threat.

10. Makrana (4)

Makrana is still searching for her first win at the races.

She made up some ground in the Wakeful last week but would be much better suited in an easier race.

11. Albanian Icon (2)

Albanian Icon is yet to run a place in three starts and looks very unlikely to figure.
