5 Lessons Learned – NFL Week 8

Do not adjust your calendar, it is in fact Monday.

Normally our weekly review of the NFL would come out on a Tuesday once every game has been played.

However with the Melbourne Cup tomorrow (and knowing where most punter’s priorities lie this week), we’re recapping the big storylines of Week 8 in the NFL a day early in the form of 5 Lessons Learned.

The good news is there is plenty to cover with breakout players, divorces, former teammates sniping at one another, overtime drama and a whole lot more.

1 – Baltimore Finds its Balance

Backing the Ravens has been a largely frustrating experience in 2022 with but their win over the Buccaneers on Friday produced their best offensive performance of the season.

We all know this is a team whose success comes down to the play of Lamar Jackson but even a guy as talented as him needs to get some help from his supporting cast.

That includes the coaches and plenty of credit has to go Greg Roman for finding a perfectly balanced gameplan to pick up a much needed win in Tampa to move to 5-3.

It started out with Jackson being asked to throw the ball to stretch the Buccaneers defence, which he did to great effect before turning to the running game in the second half.

All up the Ravens held the ball for 38:23 of the 60 minutes and amassing 453 total yards of offence.

As for that balance, 231 yards came on the ground with Justice Hill, Devin Duvernay, Jackson, Kenyan Drake and Gus Edwards contributing between 28 and 65 yards to go with Jackson’s 238 passing yards.

The scoring didn’t come until the third quarter but by then the Bucs defence was gassed and could not keep up with the Ravens.

There are still consistency questions over the Ravens but right now they look like the best team in the AFC North and could prove to be a handful come January.

Especially with Jackson playing for a big contract and not hiding his intentions.

Up next for Baltimore is the New Orleans Saints who will be coming off a confidence boosting shutout win over Las Vegas.

2 – The Broncos Really Needed That Win

The Denver Broncos, and in particular Russel Wilson have been popular punching bags through the opening eight weeks of the 2022 NFL season.

Wilson in particular has done no favours with his horrendous “Broncos country, let’s ride” catchphrase and trying to act like the toughest person in the wild west since John Dutton.

Over the last few years his former teammates have taken plenty of shots at him that have become less and less veiled regarding his desire to be a superstar in every sense of the word.

Based on what Wilson said about his activities on the flight over to London, you can imagine being his teammate would be exhausting on a good day.

It might have been a while since some of us were on a plane but even on a private charter, this is not cool in the least.

Perhaps it’s best left to Barstool to sum up his Denver tenure so far.

You could write an entire thesis on the things Wilson has done that make him come across as a little odd (there’s plenty out there), but that’s not the point of this section.

One thing that can cure most things in a team setting is winning.

At 2-5 Denver had not been doing a whole lot of winning and Wilson’s mediocre play was a big reason for that, so they needed to find a way to rebound in London against the Jaguars.

Down 10-0 midway through the second quarter, things were not looking great for the Broncos but to their credit, they found a way to get back into the game with Wilson making some key throws to help Denver get the much needed win.

Denver’s upcoming bye week will be a lot easier to cope with coming off that four point win

3 – Bill Belichick Still Haunts the Jets

Questions have been asked about Bill Belichick over the last few years, some deserved and some coming from people happy to sink the boot in at the first sign of trouble.

There were plenty of fair questions after Belichick’s bizarre management of his quarterback Mac Jones was thrust into the national spotlight when New England got demolished by Chicago last week.

However Belichick showed he still has something up his sleeve as he moved into outright second place on the all time coach wins list earning his 325th victory by defeating the New York Jets.

Making it a bit sweeter is the fact it came against the team he once served as the head coach for a period of hours.

That was Belichick’s 13th straight win over the Jets franchise with New York’s last win in this “rivalry” coming in overtime in Week 16 of the 2015 season.

It was also somewhat fitting that it was the Patriots defence serving as the driving force behind that victory as Belichick made his name on that side of the ball.

Nobody should be overreacting to this one win and claiming that the Patriots are back to being legitimate Super Bowl contenders like they have been for most of the 2000’s but they are good enough to compete most weeks against the middle-tier NFL teams.

4 – AJ Brown was the Pickup of the Offseason

He is far from the first Philadelphia Eagles receiver to make outlandish gestures but the man produces on the field.

AJ Brown, traded from Tennessee to Philadelphia as a part of a wild offseason of receiver movement had this sign hanging up in his locker.

And you know what… he was as he scored three touchdowns in the Eagles demolition of cross state rivals Pittsburgh.

Good luck to any cornerback trying to stop him because he and Jalen Hurts have struck up a great relationship by the looks of things and his acquisition has taken the Eagles to a new level.

Now the question becomes when will Philadelphia suffer its first loss of the season (if at all)?

It will take a brave bettor to back against them as they head to Houston for Friday’s game.

5 – Tennessee Got a Glimpse of Its Future

With Ryan Tannehill unable to go against Houston, rookie Malik Willis got his first NFL start against the struggling Texans.

Not that the market gave the rookie any credit with a very even head to head pricing to be found before kickoff.

Thankfully Willis got about as soft of a landing as any rookie quarterback has ever received with Derrick Henry going off against what might be his favourite opponent.

With his team needing a big game, Henry put the team on his back with 32 carries for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns including this one to open up the Titans scoring.

Willis was drafted as a project but he showed a couple of flashes to show why the Titans decided to make him the quarterback of the future.

And as long as Henry is ploughing through defences, that future is pretty bright.
