Flemington - Race 1 9:45am AEDT
It’s hard to get away from the favourite Zulfiqar in the first.
Godolphin’s lightly-raced colt was brilliant winning Maribyrnong Trial Stakes on debut, letting down beautifully under hands and heels to win with seemingly plenty left in reserve.
The son of Exceed and Excel been kept fresh for the run with nearly a month between starts, and he certainly loses no class in the saddle with William Buick stepping into the irons.
He’s drawn well, we saw him flash plenty of promise again at the jump outs last week, and there’s no reason he can’t go on with it in the Maribyrnong Plate to kick off Cup Day.
Flemington - Race 3 11:00am AEDT
The Cunning Fox can run a nice race here at an each-way quote.
He was a very consistent customer right throughout the autumn, most notably winning at Bendigo over 2200m before going on to run a clear second to Alegron in a Stakes race at Caulfield.
He’s first-up after nearly six months and will no doubt want further, but I think he can run a cheeky race with next to no weight on his back under Craig Williams.
The Patrick Payne yard has been flying of late and this boy is no stranger to winning at Flemington.
Flemington - Race 5 12:20pm AEDT
Field of Flutes has gone up a good price for a horse coming off a narrow defeat at The Valley a couple of weeks ago.
It was a rough watch for anyone that backed the Deep Field three-year-old, going down narrowly right at the line after getting a handy late split under Mark Zahra in the run home.
He was a comfortable 4.5L winner of his maiden the start prior at Warracknabeal though, and providing he handles the conditions, I think we’ll see him in the mix again from a low draw.
Flemington - Race 8 2:00pm AEDT
Montefilia is enormous value in this year’s Melbourne Cup betting markets if you fancy some home-grown talent.
The Kermadec mare recorded an impressive win over last year’s Cup winner Verry Elleegant in the Ranvet Stakes during the autumn, and her form since has been nothing short of sound.
She put in an eye-catching performance for fourth in the Caulfield Cup last time out, and although her longest win is over 2400m, she still has scope for improvement with three runs under her belt.
