What is the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association?

Volleyball happens to be one of the most popular sports in Taiwan. Be it beach volleyball or indoor game format, people love to participate in and watch the sport. Thus, it was only a matter of time before the country had its own central body to govern, develop and promote volleyball in Taiwan.

The Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association, officially known as the Volleyball Association of the Republic of China, is the central official body that governs volleyball in Taiwan. The almost seventy-year-old organisation not only manages the Taiwanese men’s and women’s national teams but also oversees the men’s and women’s volleyball leagues and the national beach volleyball teams in the country.

This article offers a brief insight into the history and the current status of the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association (CTVBA).

Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association History

In December 1943, the Republic of China Volleyball Association, previously known as the All-China Volleyball Committee, was formed. The association was reorganised four years later and then twice after that, in 1947 and 1955.

The association was renamed Volleyball Association of the Republic of China in 1962 and had new management. Since its inception, the sports body has undergone various organisational restructuring initiatives, all driven to promote the sport and improve the existing format.

Chinese Taipei men’s national volleyball team

The men’s national volleyball team represents the country at various international forums and engages in friendly matches at home and otherwise. The team began to participate in international events in 1964. Although the team has not yet qualified for the summer Olympics or the FIVB World Cup, it has performed well among the teams in its region.

The men’s team has been participating in the Asian Championship since 1983, and its highest rank in the championship is fourth place. The team finished fourth in 1983, 1997, and 2021.

The volleyball team also managed to land a third place at the Asian Games in 1998 and 2018, respectively. The team was not able to qualify for the FIVB World league till 2015, and in the subsequent years, it finished in 28th and 33rd place, respectively. Currently, the men’s national team has an FIVB ranking of 30.

Besides the national men’s volleyball team, the CTVBA also manages the country’s U23, U20, and U19 teams, as well as the men’s beach volleyball teams.

Chinese Taipei women’s national volleyball team

The Chinese Taipei women’s national volleyball team ranks 57th in the FIVB and represents the country in international events and friendly competitions.

The team made its first international appearance in 1983 at the Asian Championship, where it finished in 4th place. The team appeared in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in 1990 but did not participate in the world championship until 2006 when it re-entered the competition and finished 12th. However, the team’s victory against Japan on the opening day helped it gain recognition. The team has yet to qualify for the Olympic Games as well as the FIVB World Cup.

The women’s team first participated in the Asian Games in 1994. In 2006 it landed its first major award when it finished third at the Asian Games after beating Thailand and Kazakhstan. In the 2018 Asian Games, the team finished in 9th place.

The team appeared in the Asian Championship for the first time in 1983 and landed fourth place, which is also the highest position the team has earned so far in the championship. In 2019, the women’s team ended up in 6th place.

Besides the national women’s volleyball team, the CTVBA also manages the country’s beach volleyball team and U23, U20, and U18 teams for both categories. In addition, it also oversees domestic competitions and endorses contests held for educational institutions, even at the elementary level.

Enterprise Volleyball League

Besides the national volleyball and beach volleyball teams, the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association also hosts the Enterprise Volleyball League. Also called Top Volley Ball League, the Enterprise Volleyball League entails amateur men’s and women’s volleyball leagues.

It was established in 2004 to promote the sport and develop talent to improve Taiwan’s volleyball playing skills and competitiveness. Four teams participated in the league’s 2008 season. Presently, the men’s league has four teams, and the women’s league has five.

The Enterprise Volleyball League is presently the highest league for volleyball in Taiwan. In the future, the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association plans to make the Enterprise Volleyball League into a semi-professional or professional league.

A regular season of the Enterprise Volleyball League begins in September and ends in March next year. The regular season games are followed by playoff games. Both the regular and playoff games are scheduled on weekends to encourage crowds to attend the events.
