2022 Magic Millions Prelude Raceday Preview

The Brisbane Racing Club will sign off on 2022 this Saturday at Doomben with the Magic Millions Prelude Raceday.

With Magic Millions just two weeks away, this meeting plays an important role with three wild cards to the $11 million Gold Coast Raceday up for grabs.

The Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate is the highlight on Saturday’s card and is ably supported by the Listed Nudgee Stakes, The Shootout and The Buffering.

Our thoughts on the meeting are below.

Race 1 - 1:03pm AEDT

BENCHMARK 78 Handicap (1050 METRES)

Hold On Honey (6) hasn’t put a hoof wrong since joining the Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted stable.

The four-year-old gelding has won his past three starts. Last start he crossed easily from the outside gate to lead and dash away for a 2.05 length win here over 1050m.

The rise to 1200m looks ideal now and he’ll appreciate the sting out of the ground.

He should race on speed for Boris Thornton.

1 unit – Hold On Honey (6)

Race 2 - 1:38pm AEDT

2YO Handicap (1200 METRES)

Sunsource (3) came with a powerful finishing burst to win the Ballarat Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

It’s been six weeks since the Trent Busittin and Natalie Young-trained youngster won that day, but he recently had a nice jump out this way of going against Open Class horses. He went forward in the jump out so possesses flexibility with his racing style.

He draws the outside barrier in the field of five but gets the services of the world’s best jockey James McDonald.

1 unit – Sunsource (3)

Race 3 - 2:13pm AEDT

BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1615 METRES)

Antino (2) has been in super form this preparation, winning two of his three starts.

The Tony Gollan-trained son of Redwood suffered his first career loss last start when finishing third in The Gateway. He raced on speed and was only swamped late.

James Orman can go forward and give them something to catch.

2 units – Antino (2)

Race 4 - 2:50pm AEDT

BENCHMARK 78 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Ayahuasca (13) is another example of Queensland’s leading trainer Tony Gollan improving a horse from down south.

The five-year-old mare made short work of the wide gate when resuming over this course and distance last start. She led before dashing clear to win by 1.5 lengths.

She’ll be fitter second-up and did run well in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes at Launceston last preparation when having her second run back.

Gets the services of top jockey Jamie Kah who should settle in a great spot from barrier 4.

1 unit – Ayahuasca (13)

Race 5 - 3:32pm AEDT

SHOOT OUT (2020 METRES)

Street Dancer (7) dropped back to 1850m last start at Eagle Farm and found the line well for third, just under a length behind Gave Us Up.

The start prior the David Vandyke galloper was held up in the straight over this course and distance but once clear finished strongly to claim the win.

The drop back in distance will have sharpened him up as he takes on 2020m again. He’s undefeated in two starts over this course and distance.

1 unit each way – Street Dancer (7)

Race 6 - 4:12pm AEDT

GROUP 3 VO ROGUE PLATE (1350 METRES)

Stroll (6) showed plenty of fight to win narrowly here over 1200m second-up.

The third horse that day, Sunshine In Paris, has since won impressively in Sydney to frank the form.

The Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted-trained filly will have taken further improvement since her last start win and looks extremely well weighted under set weight conditions.

Boris Thornton can give her the run of the race from barrier 2.

2 units – Stroll (6)

Race 7 - 4:52pm AEDT

THE BUFFERING (1350 METRES)

Brigantine (8) raced outside the leader in the Listed Razor Sharp at Randwick last start and did well to box on for a 0.8 of a length third.

He was eight-weeks between runs so will strip fitter here.

James McDonald takes the ride and the only other time the pair teamed up, they won three starts back.

The James Cummings-trained son of Astern will be fitter here and should enjoy a great run from barrier 2.

2 units – Brigantine (8)

Race 8 - 5:32pm AEDT

LISTED NUDGEE STAKES (1200 METRES)

Juan Diva (2) looks close to a win after finishing second in her past two starts.

The Richard and Will Freedman-trained daughter of Snitzel found the front last start over 1300m at Eagle Farm in the Just Now before the flying Better Get Set ran her down.

The drop back to 1200m suits. She should be primed fourth-up and did win the W.J. Healy Stakes during the Queensland Winter Carnival this year when having her fourth run that preparation.

Jimmy Orman will give her every chance by settling two or three pairs back.

2 units – Juan Diva (2)

Race 9 - 6:12pm AEDT

Class 6 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Tilianam (14) on face value has been a touch disappointing in two runs back this preparation.

I’m prepared to put a line through her first-up showing at the Gold Coast as she had a torrid run racing wide throughout.

Last start the Tony Gollan-trained mare had to carry 59.5kg so did well to finish third to Chatty Lady at Eagle Farm.

She now drops to 54kg and gets Jamie Kah in the saddle who should give her a great run from barrier 2.

She should be reaching peak fitness and if she runs up to last preparation, we will see a bold showing.

1 unit – Tilianam (14)
