2023 Canterbury Sprint Day Preview

The Australian Turf Club will start the new year this Sunday with black-type racing at Canterbury.

The Listed Canterbury Sprint is the main race on the eight-race card. Exciting sprinter I Am Me is the favourite for the feature despite drawing the outside gate.

We’ve provided our best bet in each race below.

Race 1 - 3:20pm AEDT

NED AUSTRALIAN WHISKY MAIDEN PLATE (1900 METRES)

Mr Plume (10) looked like a horse that wanted a trip based on his efforts in his first two career starts.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding got that last time out when stepping up to 1900m here. He ran on well but just couldn’t get past the leader, finishing second by just quarter of a length.

He’ll be fitter fourth-up and should enjoy a nice run from barrier 5 for Nash Rawiller.

1 unit – Mr Plume (10)

Race 2 - 4:00pm AEDT

DRINKWISE MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

Step Aside (9) looked good in winning two trials prior to his debut at Warwick Farm.

He led the field up over 1300m and was only overpowered in the concluding stages. The Chris Waller-trained son of Redwood was clearly ahead of the third placed horse.

He’ll have taken improvement and gained experience from his debut run.

He has the early speed to negate the awkward gate and settle in a forward position.

1 unit – Step Aside (9)

Race 3 - 4:40pm AEDT

PETALUMA MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

Moonlight Grace (10) looks close to a win after finishing runner-up in both runs back this preparation.

The Allan Kehoe-trained filly worked home strongly from the back first-up at Hawkesbury over 1000m.

She stepped up to this distance last start at Gosford and again attacked the line with vigor only to go down by a whisker.

Reece Jones, who claims 1.5kg, can settle better than midfield before coming with a big run.

1 unit – Moonlight Grace (10)

Race 4 - 5:20pm AEDT

FURPHY BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

Super Chilled (7) put the writing on the wall two starts back when finishing a close second at Kembla Grange.

Chris Waller then sent his filly to contest a maiden over this course and distance where she showed a good turn of foot to win by just under two lengths.

She looks like she’s turned the corner and will carry less weight than last start thanks to Zac Lloyd’s claim.

1 unit each way – Super Chilled (7)

Race 5 - 6:00pm AEDT

CASTELVECCHIO FIRST YEARLINGS BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

Handsome (1) caught the eye at Wyong when returning to the track after nearly a year off.

The Kris Lees-trained import charged to the line to finish a close second over 1600m.

It was a real flashing light run and he should be improved second-up. The rise to 1900m looks ideal.

He remains in the same class but will carry 2kg less thanks to Dylan Gibbons claim.

1 unit each way – Handsome (1)

Race 6 - 6:30pm AEDT

LISTED KIA CANTERBURY SPRINT (1200 METRES)

I Am Me (3) could not have been more impressive this preparation, winning all three starts.

The speedy Maher and Eustace mare ticked off running a strong 1200m last start when dashing clear to win easily at Randwick.

The outside gate is not ideal, but she has the early speed to cross and lead. If she does, she’ll be hard to catch.

Tommy Berry reacquaints himself with I Am Me looking to keep their unbeaten record intact.

2 units – I Am Me (3)

Race 7 - 7:00pm AEDT

THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Tsarina Sophia (6) is an up-and-coming filly from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou yard who is undefeated in two starts.

She found the line strongly to win over 1000m at Wyong first-up. It looked quite soft on the line signaling there is a lot more to come.

This is harder but Brenton Avdulla sticks and he should be able to give the daughter of Russian Revolution a nice run behind what looks a good speed.

1 unit – Tsarina Sophia (6)

Race 8 - 7:30pm AEDT

TAB BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Vowmaster (2) returned from a very long spell in fine order at Randwick last start.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding settled back over 1000m before weaving a passage in the straight and savaging the line to just miss the win. It was clearly the run of the meeting.

The rise to 1200m looks ideal second-up and he drops in class.

A solid speed will help his cause.

2 units – Vowmaster (2)
