Bagot Handicap Day Preview

Flemington will host an eight race program this Sunday and what better place to kick of the New Year than at headquarters. The meeting will include two feature races, the Bagot Handicap for the stayers and the time honoured Chester Manifold stakes.

Our Ladbrokes preview can be found below.

Race 1 - 1:10pm AEDT

NEW YEAR SPRINT 2YO Fillies (1000 METRES)

The Godolphin team will unleash two of their youngsters here in the opening event for the two year old fillies and I’m going with Exploring.  This daughter of Brazen Beau looked good in a Hawkesbury trial late last month.  She did race ungenerously for the first half of the heat but when given her head, she had plenty to offer.  She’s since had an 800m jump out at Flemington where she looked to do everything right and showed plenty of prowess.  Craig Williams will take the ride.

1 unit – Expolring

Race 2 - 1:45pm AEDT

AUSTRALIAN TRAINERS' ASSOCIATION BM70 3YO (1400 METRES)

Papillon Club, the talented filly from the Greg Eurell stable was very good on debut.  She got a bit lost on the corner but picked up gamely to run second.  She had a good break and returned with two nice jump out wins before resuming at Geelong, where she put them away easily.  There was plenty to like about the win, she was always wide but was far too good in the straight.  She gets her head low and sticks her neck out and you can see she wants to do it.  She’ll jump from barrier 3, gets in with just 54.5kgs on her back and Craig Williams sticks with her

1 unit – Papillon Club

Race 3 - 2:20pm AEDT

HENRY BYRON MOORE HANDICAP BM70 (1400 METRES)

Belle El Riche has a very tidy record and she’s been racing well in stronger company.  She was terrific last start behind Life Lessons, where she chased hard to the line after being buffeted at the 400m mark.  She will have to carry 60kgs which is a slight concern but she’s tough and she might prove too good for them. Jordan Childs knows her well, he’s been onboard for her past four starts, including both wins and he’ll get the best out of her.

1 unit – Belle El Riche

Race 4 - 3:00pm AEDT

VICTORIAN JOCKEYS' ASSOCIATION SPRINT BM78 (1200 METRES)

The Maher /Eustace team look to have another very smart one on their hands in Vermentino.  The four year old is unbeaten in three starts and I think he’ll be hard to beat once again.  He has been impressive in each of his wins, he travels nicely in the run and when asked for an effort he goes to another level and I think there’s plenty more to give.  From barrier 3 he’ll get a soft run and he’ll enjoy getting out onto the big Flemington straight.

3 units – Vermentino

Race 5 - 3:40pm AEDT

2023 STUD AND STAFF STABLE AWARDS BM70 (1600 METRES)

Accuse is looking for three in a row here.  He was aided by a 10/10 ride last start but he was still able to put them away quite comfortably.  He scored a nice first up win over 1400m and before stepping out to 1700m last start.  He stays at that trip and has had a four week freshen up in between runs.  He’ll be fitter for the two runs back and from barrier 3 Johnny Allen will afford him every chance.

1 Unit – Accuse

Race 6 - 4:20pm AEDT

LISTED CHESTER MANIFOLD STAKES (1600 METRES)

This is a very interesting race with two imports making their Australian debuts but I’m going with the local form and Pal D’Oro.  The Maher / Eustace trained gelding has gone to a new level this time in, and like a few of his stablemates competing at this meeting, he too is looking to remain unbeaten this campaign.  He put a space on them when resuming in a BM70 at Cranbourne.  He then lined up in the Gold Bullion where he was caught deep facing the breeze but was too strong for them.  A few runners from that race line up here but he had the toughest run so I can’t go past him.

He gets in nicely with the minimum and Jamie Kah takes over.

1 unit – Pal D’Doro

Race 7 - 5:00pm AEDT

LISTED BAGOT HANDICAP (2800 METRES)

He might be 10 but Sound is still racing well.  He’s been getting back but running strongly through the line, suggesting that he’s looking for this trip.   Ben Melham will take the ride and from barrier one he’ll be able to tuck him away on the fence and if he gets him moving into the race at the right time, I think he’ll be hard to beat.

2 units – Sound

Race 8 - 5:40pm AEDT

GEORGE WATSON HANDICAP BM70 (1400 METRES)

Victory Bay is racing very well.  This son of So You Think went down by the narrowest of margins in this same class here a fortnight ago.  He was wide for the entirety, where as the eventual winner had a cushy run out in front.  He meets a similar field over the same distance and if he can get a nice run in transit, I think he can go one better.

1 unit – Victory Bay
