VOBIS Gold Carat Day Preview

Moonee Valley will hold the final Victorian Metropolitan meeting for 2022. It’s a great nine race card which kicks off with a $150k event or the two year olds. The feature event is the VOBIS Gold Carat over 1200m which is restricted to VOBIS Gold Qualified three year olds.

The rail will be out 2m and it looks as though they’ll be racing on a good 4.

Our Ladbrokes preview can be found below.

Race 1 - 12:35pm AEDT

This a great little race to kick off the card and I’m going with the top weight, Croatian Belle.  She’s already got the form on the board and there was a lot to like about her debut win.  She was a touch awkward out of the gates but mustered nice speed to put herself into the race and did everything right from there.  She cornered well, was strong to the line and put them away easily.

The fact that she’s already a winner over this track and distance is a big plus and I think she can get the job done again.

RAYMOND MARTIN HANDICAP BM84 (1200 METRES)

The Maher /Eustace team look have another very smart one on their hands in Vermentino.  The four year old is unbeaten in three starts and although he will be taking a big step up in a grade, I think he’ll prove very hard to beat once again.  He comes out of a Benchmark 70 but does drop 4.5kgs.  He has been impressive in each of his wins, he looks to relax nicely in the run and when asked for an effort he goes to another level and I think there’s plenty left to give.

From barrier 6 Ethan Brown should be able to keep him out in clear running and I think he’ll be too strong for them.

ALL-STAR MILE ON SALE NOW HANDICAP BM70 (3000 METRES)

Kathryn Durden is doing a terrific job with the former Kiwi, Platinum Spirit.  Whilst his win record isn’t that flash, he has won two from his last five and was solid last start in his first attempt over 3000m.  He finished third behind Eaton, who also lines up in this race but Eaton had a dream run through, where as this boy had to come right around them.   He will wear a Norton bit for the first time and this should help him to come back under Jordan Childs, settle better and will hopefully see him run out a really strong 3000m.

Race 4 - 2:20pm AEDT

LADBROKES SAME RACE MULTI HANDICAP BM70 (2040 METRES)

Highland Jakk has been getting back but finding the line nicely.  He was very strong to the post over 1880m at Flemington a fortnight ago and should relish stepping out to 2040m.  He has won over this trip and may be able to settle that bit closer from the inside draw.

Perhaps the only concern is how he’ll handle the Moonee Valley circuit as he is used to racing on the bigger tracks. Craig Williams takes the reins and I’m sure he’ll get him moving into the race early to give him every chance.

1 unit – Highland Jakk

Race 5 - 3:00pm AEDT

ENTRY EDUCATION HANDICAP BM70 (1600 METRES)

Luke Oliver will saddle up three runners in this event, I’ll probably pick the wrong one but I’m keen on Florida Dream.

A last start winner over this trip at this track, Florida Dream will jump from the inside gate and gets 3kgs off with Hannah Edgley’s claim.  It has been over six weeks since that run but he had a nice 800m jump out at Cranbourne three weeks ago to keep him up to the mark.

1 Unit – Florida Dream

Race 6 - 3:40pm AEDT

SHARP EXTENSIVE IT HANDICAP BM84 (1600 METRES)

Kettle Hill was terrific in his debut Australian run behind Savannah Cloud, which has since gone on to win again.  This lightly raced six year old got back and didn’t have much luck in the early part of the straight on the Hillside track.  When he couldn’t get the the outside the rider had to alter course back to the inside and he was doing his best work late.  He’ll be fitter for that run, has a great record over the mile and with an ounce of luck he’ll be hard to beat.

Riot and Rose comes out of that same race and also caught the eye when flashing home late.  He was taken back to last off the wide gate and produced a brilliant turn of foot to finish 4th.  The step to the mile should suit and he’ll be charging home late.

Race 7 - 4:20pm AEDT

LADBROKES MATES MODE HANDICAP BM64 (1200 METRES)

River Noire has been impressive in both starts to date.  She won by a big space on debut at Moe and then went to a Saturday Metro Benchmark 70 for the three year olds.  She started favourite but was only beaten a length by her more experienced stablemate, She Dances.  I think she’ll continue to improve but the wide draw here is a concern.

Elite Icon hasn’t had much luck this campaign.  He struck heavy tracks which weren’t to his liking and was a bit plain last time over the 1000m at Sandown.  He gets back out to 1200m here which looks to be his preferred distance.  He’s drawn barrier 1 and his best runs have been at this track.  I think he can bounce back and run a big race.

1 Unit E/W River Noire

Race 8 - 5:00pm AEDT

VOBIS GOLD CARAT 3YO (1200 METRES)

She Dances step outs from the in-form Peter Moody yard and she’s a smart, progressive filly.  She was doing her best work late, first up at Group 3 level over 1100m.  She then won her next two in good style over 1200m and I think she can make it three in a row.  She’ll jump from barrier 1.

Boldinho has a tidy record but has yet to step out to 1200m in his nine career starts.  He has been strong to the line in recent runs which suggests that he may be ready for this trip now.  He’s drawn beautifully in barrier 3 and Ethan Brown knows him well.

2 units E/W – She Dances

Race 9 - 5:40pm AEDT

DRUMMOND GOLD HANDICAP BM70 (1200 METRES)

Quraysha presents from the Maher / Eustace camp. She is racing well and was a dominant winner here over this distance earlier this month.  She will need a bit of luck from the wide gate but Matthew Cartwright is riding very well, having recorded a double on Christmas Eve and then again on Boxing Day, and he will take 1.5kgs off.

1 unit – Quraysha
