Doomben Preview – Wednesday, 1st February

Doomben will play host to QLD’s major metropolitan meeting on Wednesday with another eight-race card set.

The weather is overcast, the track is rated a Soft 6, and the rail is out 10m across the course.

Race 1 - 1:38pm AEDT

Girls Day Out 4 March QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate (1200m)

Delarenta is on debut for Chris Munce and looks capable of winning based on his recent trial efforts.

He beat home a small field in similar condition a few weeks ago and is likely to roll forward and give his rivals something to catch.

Mixed Spice ran on well for third at Eagle Farm two runs back and is a better horse than his recent effort on the Gold Coast suggests. He’s got a fitness edge over his rivals and the blinkers come off now for the first time.

Race 2 - 2:13pm AEDT

Cascade Class 5 Handicap (1660m)

Ghostwriter has let us down on a couple of occasions recently, but this still feels like his race to lose.

He was the beaten favourite over a similar journey here a few weeks ago where he probably over-raced during the middle stages, which cost him in the end.

Even so, he’s placed in all four starts this prep and has found the money on all five occasions when racing at this venue. Draws low, handles some sting out of the track, and should be hard to beat against this small field.

Race 3 - 2:48pm AEDT

Sky Racing Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap (1350m)

Different Road is making his first start north of the border after opening his career in NSW.

The Stratum Star four-year-old resumed at Warwick Farm early last month where he led for most of the way before being gunned down out wide in the late stages.

He had no luck at Newcastle last time out when wide down the straight, a run that suggested 1400m might have been a touch too far. Back in trip and against slightly easier company, he has room for improvement third-up.

Race 4 - 3:23pm AEDT

Racecoures Village Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap (1350m)

Bright Tiara is knocking on the door of a maiden win following three impressive starts this campaign.

The Dissident filly ran back-to-back fourths at the Gold Coast and Beaudesert before stepping out on the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago where she stormed home late with a well-timed run to finish a narrow runner-up.

She’ll go into this assignment rock-hard fit for three runs back and just needs the track to stay dry to be a real chance.

Race 5 - 3:58pm AEDT

Ladbrokes Punter Assist BM68 Handicap (2060m)

Sibylla is looking to go on with the job after winning at Ipswich over shorter a couple of weeks ago.

She’s drawn ideally in gate 2 and should be able to give this a real shake with James Orman in the saddle, the man responsible for her win second-up at Ipswich back in November.

The pair get in quite well at the weights here and I think they’ll settle back early and save their best for late.

Race 6 - 4:33pm AEDT

XXXX Dry BM75 Handicap (1050m)

Stellar Magic tends to fly fresh with a win and two placings to her name from five starts.

She won her recent trial against a small field at Deagon quite well last week and gets the nose band on for the first time now with Ben Thompson booked to ride again.

This distance range looks ideal to leadoff her campaign, and from barrier 8, I think we’ll see the pair running on late.

Race 7 - 5:10pm AEDT

Souths Sports Club BM65 Handicap (1200m)

Huss On First won her maiden over this track and distance on debut last July and was far from disgraced up in class a couple weeks later finishing three lengths fourth.

She hasn’t been seen since but has enjoyed two impressive trials leading in that suggest she’s ready to fire.

Ben Thompson has been responsible for both rides so far and any extra raina bout should improve their chances.

Race 8 - 5:10pm AEDT

BRC Membership Plus Class 2 Handicap (1350m)

Interesting race with a couple key chances shooting for a hat-trick.

Our Magnus looks tough to beat, but I like Hill Billy Flyer on top narrowly having won here over the track and distance a few weeks ago.

The son of Spill The Beans was even more impressive winning his maiden by 4.5 lengths at Toowoomba the start prior, and the claim should help with Isabella Rabjones retaining the ride.

There looks to be a hot tempo on paper, but if the pair can slide in and find cover early, they’ll be hard to hold out.
