Eagle Farm Preview – Saturday 4th March

The Brisbane Racing Club is set to host a nine-race program this Saturday at Eagle Farm. With the QTIS Jewel Raceday just two weeks away, we’ll get to assess where some of the contenders at in the Two and Three-Year-Old Preludes. The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail out four metres the entire course.

Continue reading for our top selections for each of the nine races.

Race 1 - 1:03pm AEDT

BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1600 METRES)

Hokahey (4) has found a new lease of life since joining Jack Bruce’s stable. The five-year-old mare has won her past two starts in fine fashion.

After settling back and charging to the line two starts ago at Doomben over 1350m, she settled closer last start when rising to this distance. The result was the same with the daughter of War Chant letting down powerfully to win by 2.61 lengths.

This is harder but she’s racing in great form and Sam Collett has developed an undefeated partnership with her.

Race 2 - 1:38pm AEDT

QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 3YO QUALITY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Beast Mode (3) returns to the track looking to continue his unbeaten run. The David Vandyke-trained son of Better Than Ready has won his first three race starts.

After winning his first two starts on his home track at the Sunshine Coast, he came to Eagle Farm and fought gamely to win by half a length over this course and distance.

He warmed up for this with a nice trial win at Deagon. Brodie Loy replaces the injured Martin Harley and should race on speed.

1 Unit – Beast Mode (3)

Race 3 - 2:13pm AEDT

QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1820 METRES)

Where Ya Bean (11) did very little in his first six career starts and to be fair looked like he had no idea what the racing caper was all about.

However, the penny dropped for the Shaun Dwyer-trained gelding at his seventh start when he broke through at massive odds over 1670m at Ipswich. He proved that was no fluke with an impressive display at the Sunshine Coast over 1800m. Matthew Powell rolled forward from the wide gate before producing the fastest last 200m split of the race to win easily by 3.5 lengths.

Unlike his last two starts, he draws beautifully in barrier 3 which should see Powell comfortably settle in a forward position. He’ll prove hard to run down with 54.5kg.

Race 4 - 2:52pm AEDT

QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 2YO Fillies Plate (1000 METRES)

Within Reason (12) made a successful return to racing last Wednesday when running on strongly to win over this course and distance.

The Desleigh Forster-trained daughter of Spirit Of Boom looked to be above average when she ran well for fourth in the Calaway Gal on debut last preparation. She looks to have come back a more furnished filly this time in work.

She’ll have taken improvement from her first-up win. The wide draw is not ideal but if Sam Collett can find a spot with cover, she’ll be hard to hold out in the run home.

1 Unit – Within Reason (12)

Race 5 - 3:32pm AEDT

QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 2YO Colts & Geldings Plate (1000 METRES)

Mister Moderation (5) is on debut for Tony and Maddysen Sears. The Heroic Valour colt looked good in a trial earlier this month.

He jumped well and controlled the trial from in front. Ben Thompson had to keep his mind on the job late but he easily accounted for the opposition.

Thompson sticks which is a good sign given Team Sears have Top Fun in the race which the Group 1 winning hoop had been riding. He should settle on speed and fight out the finish.

1 Unit – Mister Moderation (5)

Race 6 - 4:12pm AEDT

OPEN Handicap (1820 METRES)

Mohican Heights (1) returns to Brisbane after a solid effort to finish fifth by 3.37 lengths in the Listed Parramatta Cup last start at Randwick.

Two starts back the Chris Waller-trained galloper settled handy and powered to the line to win well over this course and distance.

He should be reaching peak fitness now and has won fourth-up previously. Brodie Loy can give the six-year-old an economical run from barrier 2 and will be tough to hold out.

1 Unit – Mohican Heights (1)

Race 7 - 4:52pm AEDT

BENCHMARK 75 Handicap (1200 METRES)

The training partnership of Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted claimed their first Group 1 title last Saturday when Uncommon James won the Oakleigh Plate. While this is a Benchmark 75 and not a Group 1, the duo can taste success again with the same colours here with Birriecart (4).

The striking chestnut four-year-old gelding resumes on the back of a solid trial where he finished off well behind proven gallopers Baller and Isotope.

He races well fresh and won over this distance first-up at Doomben last preparation. Boris Thornton will again ride Birriecart having won four of five times on him. The pair should settle in the first few pairs.

1 Unit – Birriecart (4)

Race 8 - 5:32pm AEDT

OPEN Handicap (1200 METRES)

Hilal (1) makes his return to racing looking to break a 70-week winless drought.

The Group 2 winning son of Fastnet Rock has had a change of stables and has joined the Tony Gollan yard. Queensland’s number one trainer has a history of turning horses’ careers around and I’m banking on him getting the best out of this guy.

And he looks to have already had an impact with Hilal looking very good cruising around for a close second behind stablemate Baller. There looks to be good speed in this race which should see Angela Jones, who claims 2kg, slide across from the outside gate and find a position.

On his best form and a pinch of luck, he can put this field away.

1 Unit – Hilal (1)

Race 9 - 6:12pm AEDT

Class 6 Plate (1400 METRES)

Stuttering (4) returned to the winner’s stall last start with a tough on pace victory over this course and distance.

It was the first win for the Rob Heathcote-trained gelding since July 2020 when he won at Ipswich. Incidentally, jockey Mark Du Plessis was aboard on both occasions with no less than eight other jockeys taking the reins in between without success. The hoop they call ‘Two Plus Three’ has been in great form since returning from injury.

The son of Love Conquers All is well drawn in barrier 1. Du Plessis can push forward and either lead or be handy.
