2023 Clare Lindop Stakes Day Preview

Black-type racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday with the running of the Listed Manihi Classic and the Clare Lindop Stakes.

We’ve run the rule over the entire 10-race meeting and offer our best bets here!

Race 1 - 11:02am AEDT

The Junction Handicap (1100m)

Competitive race to start the day but I’ve gone with Harley’n’rose on top.

This two-year-old by Holler was good winning on debut, stalking the pace and finding the front over the final 100m to score by nearly 1.5 lengths over the same trip.

He’s been kept fresh for the run and his recent jump out was sound. Gets another dry track, draws to get the gun run, and can easily make it two-from-two at a good price.

Race 2 - 11:37am AEDT

Croser Handicap (1600m)

Sailors Book is a Victorian-based three-year-old that has shown plenty at the races in four starts to date.

The son of Merchant Navy broke maiden first-up at Werribee with a comfortable two-length win before stepping out at Sandown where he finished two lengths off Dashing, who has since gone on to run a place in the Morphettville Guineas.

I think 1700m was a step too far last time out at the ‘Bool, so back to the mile with a couple kg’s off, I think he runs well.

Race 3 - 12:12pm AEDT

Peter Elberg Funerals Handicap (1050m)

Joseylin has made the journey south with some strong form on her resume.

The Pride of Dubai mare has been up for a while, but she’s held it together nicely returning a win at Cranbourne four runs back and three straight placings across The Valley and Sandown.

She was beaten 1.5 lengths by Unflinching back in January, a horse that has gone on to win two starts since. This is a step back in class and with only 57kg’s on her back, she should be hard to hold out.

Race 4 - 12:47pm AEDT

Furphy Handicap (1200m)

Versetto bounced back with a much-improved performance on the Parks track last week finishing a narrow runner-up to smart Kiwi import Pontedera.

He just lacked something extra in the final few strides to get the job done, but it was another honest effort off the back of a complete forgive over the track and distance here the start prior.

I think the decision to race on the quick backup warrants enormous respect, and he should get a similar run in transit from an identical gate. Callan Murray retaining the ride is huge for his chances and he’s well-deserving of a win.

Race 5 - 1:27pm AEDT

Fleurieu Milk Company (2000m)

Inordinate won over a similar journey during the spring at Yarra Valley and gets his first look at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Bedggood-trained five-year-old doesn’t win out of turn, but he did give a good sign at Sandown last time out making up ground along the rails to finish two-lengths fourth.

That was his first run back in over a month, so I think there’s still some improvement to come. Drawn ideally with Will Price’s claim put to good use, he’s a nice value play in an open race.

Race 6 - 2:07pm AEDT

Grand Syndicates supporting SAROA Handicap (1100m)

Two Odd Sox has gone up a nice price coming off a win at Clare.

The old boy gave away a start but was too good in the finish, drawing clear after rounding the turn and putting a good gap between his rivals.

He’s raced quite well at this track in the past with two wins and 10 placings to his name, and despite the wide gate, it’s hard to knock his recent form.

Race 7 - 2:47pm AEDT

Listed Manihi Classic (1100m)

Philonize looked the winner over the Matrice Stakes three weeks ago, leading for most of the way before coming undone over the final furlong where she was nabbed by Another Award and Outlaws Revenge.

That was just her second run back from a three-month spell, and the step back to 1100m should mean she’s stronger when it matters most. The Reward For Effort mare is three from four over this trip and should have no problem finding the front again from the low draw.

Race 8 - 3:27pm AEDT

Grand Syndicates Handicap (1600m)

Montepulciano was much-improved over the track and distance last-start, laying down a challenge in the dying stages only to be denied right on the line.

His previous effort first-up wasn’t much chop, but the form out of that contest has been good with four coming and winning since.

Fitter now for two runs and back to easier company, he looks well-placed to strike.

Race 9 - 4:04pm AEDT

Listed Clare Lindop Stakes (1600m)

I was with As Time Goes By a few weeks ago at Ballarat and I’m not about hop off following that strong runner-up performance.

The Deep Impact filly has run a place in both starts this prep, and considering she was wide without cover and still hit the line hard last time out, I think there’s definite improvement still to come.

The blinkers go back on again, and while this is a tougher challenge, she gets in quite well carrying 55kg’s and should get a much easier time of it in transit.

Race 10 - 4:44pm AEDT

Goodwood Carnival at Morphettville Handicap (1050m)

This is a tough race with a stack of winning chances to close the program.

Miss Roseiano was a winner of the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview to begin her career and went on to run some honest races right throughout the spring.

She’s since changed hands to Peter Gelagotis, who had her fired up at Pakenham a couple of weeks ago where she led for most of the way before her condition gave way in the final stages.

Fitter now, out over a similar trip and with an in-form Zac Spain steering, I think she can go close to winning this.
