5 Lessons Learned – AFL Round 7

Thrilling finishes, big bags, dynasties over, and goals of the year kicked.

What did the Punters learn from it?

We’ve put together a five-leg multi of hindsight that we like to call 5 Lessons Learned.

(1) Everybody loves Collingwood

In the space of five days, Collingwood yet again finds a way to come back from trailing at three-quarter time and their skipper/coach charms everyone in doing it as well.

Collingwood is must-see TV.

Even if you don’t barrack for the Magpies – you’ll watch them and enjoy watching them in the process.

This is a team that has won 10 of their last 13 games when trailing at three-quarter time and even with the questionable home cooking umpiring in Adelaide -they still went on to bloody win it.

If you don’t support the Magpies, you really want to hate them, but they are such an amazing footy team.

Collingwood sits on top of the ladder and is currently $4.50 premiership favourites, with Geelong and Melbourne equal second at $5.

Magpie fans should be loving every minute of this, and everyone else is having mixed emotions – but it’s ok to like them.

(2) The Tigers won’t play finals

It’s nice that Damien Hardwick still has faith in the Tigers season (at least publicly), but finals in 2023 – yeah, nah…not going to happen.

Richmond sits 16th on the ladder with one win, one draw, and five losses.

Can this side win at least 12 games from their next 15?

Not with the effort that was put up on Sunday against the Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium.

We haven’t seen Richmond play like that since 2016.

While there are still some significant outs at the Tigers, not even their impending return can turn their season around.

Tiger time is done.

For Richmond supporters like this author, it’s been great, but we’ve had our time in the Sun, and a bit too much of those Gold Coast Suns as well.

(3) Coaches hate footy.

Well, they are a buzz kill.

As pointed out by Robbo (welcome back) in his Tackle column, Charlie Curnow was benched when he was looking to boot 10 goals, and so was Tom Hawkins when he was on eight on Sunday.

Why do coaches do this?

Everyone loves a big bag of goals and when a game is one-sided hoping that the big boy up forward can crack double figures keeps things interesting.

Imagine if one of these players ends up in the high 90s for a game but the rotations mean they need to go to the bench?

I wouldn’t put it beyond some coaches to do this.

Don’t even get me started on kicking a goal and going to the bench.

Yet again, just when you think one of the great elements of footy is back – big bags of goals, but the phys edders and killjoys that are the 18 people in the coaches box found a real to kill the vibe yet again.

(4) Take the 60+ against West Coast and North Melbourne

Some are already going down the path of comparing the Eagles and Roos to Fitzroy’s last ever season, but that’s not our job in this blog.

In just about every game involving North Melbourne or West Coast, their opponent is going to be at Winx-like odds of $1.01

You might as well take those respective clubs to be beaten by 60+ each and every week for the remainder of the season, as was the case on Saturday night when they both got floggings of 90 points (North Melbourne) and 108 points (West Coast)

To back a 60+ point belting, simply go into the respective match market, go into the winning margin section> Exact winning margin > 60+ points.

If the Roos and Eagles are going to be easy beats for the rest of the season, you might as well make a profit out of it.

(5) Will Ashcroft has won Goal of the Year

I know that I declared that Charlie Cameron won goal of the year in last week’s lessons, but Lions father/son young gun Will Ashcroft decided to go one better at the Gabba on Saturday.

Either way, the Goal of the Year award is going to a Brisbane player, and that player will be Will Ashcroft.
